  • BFAR-6 patrol boat sinks

    The eight-year-old patrol boat of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-6 (BFAR-6) docked at the Iloilo River in Barangay Arsenal-Aduana was found sinking. Around 8 a.m. yesterday, July 4, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and various rescue groups refloated the patrol boat from the water.
  • Don't eat dead fish from oil spill-hit areas, BFAR warns

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Western Visayas has issued a warning against eating dead fish in coastal areas contaminated by bunker fuel from a barge damaged by an explosion last week. Remia Aparri, BFAR regional director, said an undetermined volume of dead milkfish (bangus) fingerlings in fish cages were reported in the waters off Barangay Hoskyn in the capital town of Jordan, Guimaras. She explained that milkfish in fish pens are mainly prone to the threat of leaked bunker oil since they cannot swim out to the open sea.

    Regional Director Remia Aparri of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with two local government units and other enforcement agencies to strengthen the protection of marine environment and resources in Western Visayas. In the opening of the 54th Fish Conservation Week Celebration in Tanza, Iloilo City on Oct 15, 2017, Aparri cited the importance of preserving, conserving and protecting the coastal and marine resources as the main source of livelihood of the coastal communities. The MOU with Mayor Siegfredo Betita of Carles and a representative of Mayor Milliard Villanueva of Concepcion, Iloilo seeks to create a joint task force that will address the rampant and unabated illegal, unreported fishing activities within the municipal waters.
