All set for oil recovery: Guimaras oil recovery operation second in history

Recovery operations for the remaining oil inside the compartments of sunken tanker MT Solar 1 off the waters of Guimaras will already start as scheduled this Wednesday, March 14. Allied Shield, the recovery vessel of Italy-based Sonsub Limited, has already arrived in Bacolod City last Saturday. Sonsub was contracted by the Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Club, an insurer of the Solar 1 to retrieve any remaining oil on the ill-fated vessel presently lying under 640 meters of water.
PCG continues cleanup of M/V Princess of the Stars oil spill

The Philippine Coast Guard is continuing its clean up operations on the 400 liters of oily mixture from the sunken M/V Princess of the Stars that spilled out into the coastline of San Fernando, Romblon on May 31. In a statement, the PCG reported that the oil spill came out of the engine room as they were pumping air to refloat the vessel on May 31. The PCG-Marine Environment Protection Unit personnel conducted a shoreline inspection and discovered traces of oil spill.
Oil sludge removal starts in Ilocos

Using shovels, rakes and dust pans, and even spoons, government employees, residents, fishermen and volunteers from different towns of La Union tediously scooped and gathered the coagulated oil that had reached coastal areas here. Reports from local governments and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said the gel-like substance or sludge from a sunken Myanmar vessel or another ship had reached as far as the coastline of Paoay, Ilocos Norte. In La Union, at least 200 sacks of the sludge had been collected from the towns of San Juan, Luna, Bangar, Balaoan, Bactonan and San Fernando City in the last three days, said Ranilo Ipac, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Tubbataha still open to divers

The ongoing salvage operations for the United States Navy warship USS Guardian, which remains grounded at the Tubbataha Reef, will not prevent diving enthusiasts from exploring the underwater beauty of the diving site. Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Palawan District commander Commodore Enrico Efren Evangelista said divers would still be allowed by the Tubbataha Management Office (TMO) to explore parts of the coral reef not affected by the grounding incident. The USS Guardian ran aground in Tubbataha Reef and damaged about 4,000 square meters of the atoll.

The salvage team working on the USS Guardian, which ran aground in Tubbataha Reef, removed the warship’s last remaining section early Saturday afternoon after being stuck on the Unesco World Heritage site for more than 10 weeks, a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) official said. PCG Palawan District chief Commodore Enrico Efren Evangelista said the stern of the 68-meter US mine countermeasures ship was lifted off the reef at around 2 p.m. The US warship hit the upper side of the South Atoll, one of the two main atolls comprising the Tubbataha Reefs, at dawn on Jan. 17 while it was on its way to Indonesia.
Solar-lighted coral beads used in Albay

The country's first underwater solar-powered and coral-beaded rosary was installed in Albay Gulf yesterday. Dubbed as "Coral Genesis," the 60 coral beads with attached solar panels, bulbs and a concrete crucifix forming a 65-meter rosary was installed 25 feet deep in the coastal waters of Sto. Domingo town in Albay. Martin Reynoso, chairman of Jaycees Legazpi chapter which sponsored the project, said the giant coral rosary automatically lights up at night.
Law enforcers also behind illegal fishing in Lingayen Gulf

There must be something about the coastal town of San Fabian in Pangasinan which attracts tourists, beach lovers, sea creatures and even unscrupulous fishermen. All are welcome, Mayor Constante Agbayani said, except fishermen who come with illegal fishing gear, explosives and other destructive means to catch fish that abound in the town’s waters. Beachgoers and tourists are lured by the calm and shallow water while sea creatures, like whale sharks (butanding), regularly come to graze whenever the Lingayen Gulf is teeming with tiny fish and shrimps.
US pays P87m for Tubbataha reef damage

The Philippine government has received P87.03 million from the US government as payment for the damage caused by a US Navy minesweeper that ran aground on a protected coral reef two years ago, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday. The minesweeper USS Guardian ran aground and caused damage to the Tubbataha Reef, a World Heritage Site in Palawan, in 2013. “The compensation will be utilized for the protection and rehabilitation of Tubbataha Reef Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Portions of the fund will also be used to further enhance capability to monitor the area and prevent similar incidents in the future,” the DFA said in a statement.
Davao plans for stronger fishery law enforcement

The City Agriculturist Office (CAO) is seeking a P3-million budget to strengthen the implementation of national and local fishery laws intended to protect marine and coastal resources. The project will involve closer coordination among the Barangay Fishery Law Enforcement Team, police-maritime group, the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 11, the councils of the city’s coastal barangays, and the Barangay Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils. Rocelio T. Tabay, CAO assistant department head, said the project, which is part of the Fishery Resource Management Program, will help deter resource destruction and degradation. The Fisheries Code of the Philippines was amended in February through Republic Act 8550 while the city enforces its Comprehensive Fisheries Code passed in 2008.

Like most fishermen in the seaside village of Cato here, Joseph Daroca was not aware that the Philippines had filed a case against China over the maritime dispute in the West Philippine Sea. When told that the UN-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague had ruled that the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal was part of the Philippines, Daroca’s face lit up. “It’s good if that’s the case,” said Daroca, 44. He had stopped joining fishing trips to the shoal since January last year after their boat was driven away by the Chinese Coast Guard.

Benham Rise, the underwater landmass northeast of Luzon that the United Nations declared part of the Philippines’ continental shelf, has been grabbing headlines because of the presence of Chinese ships that may or may not have been given permission to do research in the area, according to conflicting claims by President Duterte, Defense chief Delfin Lorenzana, as well as Foreign Affairs officials. What remains undisputed, however, are the possible trove of mineral and gas deposits about 3,000 meters below the water’s surface that have yet to be discovered. Sometimes referred to as the Benham Plateau, the landmass, described to have a craggy or rough surface, is bigger than Luzon or almost half the size of the Philippine’s total land area. It extends eastward off the provinces of Aurora and Isabel, and the Bicol region, but has always been connected to Luzon’s landmass through the Bicol and Palanan saddles.
LLDA to lose P80 M in fish pen demolition

The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) expects to lose around P80 million in revenue with the dismantling of illegal fish pens in Laguna de Bay in the next three months. The LLDA is targeting the demolition of illegal fish pens in 3,000 hectares of the lake. Based on the action plan of the LLDA, fish pens with no permits, those blocking navigational lanes, covering excessive areas, delinquent in payment and put up outside the designated areas will be prioritized.
San Jose gets new fish port

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) turned over the P40-million facility to the local government on Wednesday. The new fishing port will serve not only San Jose de Buenavista but also the neighboring towns, said Iloilo Fish Port Complex officer-in-charge Custodio Balaowing. It will enhance the livelihood of the fisherfolk, bring business to the commercial fishing boat operators and improve the local fishing industry, he said. “Expect more business for the next days.”
BFAR, partners ink pact on marine conservation

In the opening of the 54th Fish Conservation Week Celebration in Tanza, Iloilo City on Oct 15, 2017, Aparri cited the importance of preserving, conserving and protecting the coastal and marine resources as the main source of livelihood of the coastal communities. The MOU with Mayor Siegfredo Betita of Carles and a representative of Mayor Milliard Villanueva of Concepcion, Iloilo seeks to create a joint task force that will address the rampant and unabated illegal, unreported fishing activities within the municipal waters.

P.6 M sought for Albay coral reef damage

The city government here has asked the owner of a cargo vessel that ran aground and destroyed around 200 square meters of coral reef in Albay Gulf to pay P665,000 in damages. Mayor Noel Rosal said the captain of MV Jerly Lily gave assurance yesterday that they would pay the amount. Rosal said the cargo vessel was loaded with copra when it ran aground in Pasig Reef off Barangay Arimbay.
No leak from stranded cargo ship in Antique

The cargo ship that ran aground off the coast of Barangay 4 has no leakage, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). M/V Star Liberty has been stuck some 300 meters from the shoreline of San Jose since Monday after strong wind and waves due to the southwest monsoon brought it there. PCG-Antique station commander Perlita Cinco said they have not seen fuel floating on seawaters as of Tuesday.
ATI joins Coast Guard, stakeholders in bay cleanup

(ATI) recently teamed up with the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, the city government of Manila, local schools and other maritime and business stakeholders in cleaning up the shores of Manila Bay in support of Ocean Conservancy’s 33rd International Coastal Cleanup event. ATI employees joined thousands of volunteers who turned up at the Manila Baywalk Area during the weekend clean-up drive to help clear tons of debris, especially those washed ashore in the spate of recent typhoons and weather disruptions. The Manila South Harbor operator supports the annual initiative with the hopes of raising environmental awareness and encouraging more stakeholders to protect the historic Manila Bay, a major trade waterway and livelihood source for nearby coastal communities.
