    Siphoning of oil from the sunken motor tanker Princess Empress is expected to be completed by June 19, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said yesterday. PCG spokesman Rear Admiral Armand Balilo said the dynamic support vessel Fire Opal is on schedule in removing the remaining oil from the motor tanker. “Dapat by June 19 nasipsip na nila. Mukhang on target naman sila,” Balilo told a news forum.

    3 nabbed for illegal fishing

    Whale watching in 3 Bohol areas suspended

    The provincial government of Bohol has stopped all whale watching or interaction activities in Albuquerque, Dauis and Lila towns for alleged violation of the law. Bohol Gov. Aris Aumentado issued Executive Order (EO) 10, stating the activity in Alburquerque is being questioned as the whale watching site is reportedly located within the Albuquerque-Loay-Loboc protected area. The EO said that whale watching and interaction activities in all three areas are sanctioned by their respective local government units, but have no clearance from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

    Dagupan illegal fish pens demolished

    The city government of Dagupan in Pangasinan province has started demolishing illegal fish pens and cages in three barangays that violated the local fishery code. Seven illegal and oversized fish pens and cages in the villages of Bonuan Gueset, Pugaro-Suit and Salapingao have been dismantled with the help of the Task Force Bantay Ilog, according to Patrick Dizon, officer-in-charge of city’s agriculture office.

    Fishermen appealed to the government on Sunday to increase coast guard and naval patrols to protect them from the Chinese Coast Guard, which has stepped up their efforts in recent months to keep them from entering the Scarborough (Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag) Shoal lagoon, where fishes are abundant. In an interview on radio dzBB, the spokesman of the Bigkis ng Mangingisda Federation in Masinloc, Zambales said Chinese vessels and rubber boats continue to block Filipino fishermen from entering the lagoon. “Chinese fishing vessels are also outside, but they can fish more freely in our reef. When Filipino fishermen insist on entering, they are being blocked and chased by Chinese Coast Guard rubber boats,” said Henrelito Empoc, the group’s spokesperson, speaking in Filipino.

The Japanese Embassy in Manila said the damage done to coral reefs, presumably by Chinese boats in Rozul (Iroquois) Reef was “very alarming news.” “Our oceans are the lifeblood of our plant, and coral reefs are its colorful heartbeat.     SMPC launches mangrove planting

    Barge runs aground off Negros

    A barge loaded with 1,600 metric tons of industrial coal ran aground in Negros Oriental on Wednesday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported yesterday. TML Blue Sky Jay was being towed by motor tug TML The CEO in the waters off Barangay Okiot in Bais City when the accident occurred. The barge and the motor tug were headed to Barangay Campuyo in Manjuyod town when they encountered rough sea condition.
