    The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has imposed fines and sanctions against the Chinese dredgers that allegedly conducted “illegal activities” in Manila Bay and rivers in Zambales, a government official said. In a text message to the BusinessMirror, Marina National Capital Region Director Marc Anthony Pascua said the agency has conducted an investigation into the report submitted by the National Coast Watch Center (NCWC) and has taken action against the alleged perpetrators.

    The National Coast Watch Center (NCWC) has flagged alleged “illegal” activities of Chinese dredgers on Manila Bay and rivers in Zambales. In a report submitted to the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), the NCWC said Chinese vessels allegedly conducted dredging of reclamation sand and transported it to the reclamation areas on Manila Bay.

    A total of 492 illegal aquaculture structures that include fish cages, pens, traps, or baklads, and oyster and mussel farms in Manila Bay area have so far been marked for demolition in four coastal towns of Cavite, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said. These include a total of 333 structures in Cavite City and159 in Kawit and Noveleta.
