    PCG, BFAR operations nab illegal fishers

    The Philippine Coast Guard teamed up with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to conduct patrols in Samar Sea to curb illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities in the rich fishing ground of Eastern Visayas. This week, the joint team apprehended two commercial fishing boats operating on the said water that were using the banned Modified Danish Seine locally known as hulbot-hulbot. BFAR regional information officer Christine Gresola said that the two commercial fishing vessels were found fishing on the municipal waters of Daram Island and Tarangnan town in Samar.

    Rampant illegal fishing in Quezon waters alarms group

    Rampant destructive fishing methods were again reported in the bays of Tayabas and Lamon in Quezon province, prompting an environmental group to urge the local government to curb the illegal activities. Jay Lim, project officer of Tanggol Kalikasan (TK), said the resurgence of illegal fishing activities was confirmed by a local fisherman in this city’s coastal village of Dalahican along the Tayabas Bay. TK is a public interest law office that advocates environmental protection. A local fisherman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, blamed the presence of large commercial fishing operations for the dwindling catch in the bay area.

    46 fall in illegal fishing crackdown in Cavite

    Fory-six fishermen onboard two fishing boats were rounded up in a recent illegal fishing crackdown in Cavite, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Friday. The fishermen were caught fishing off Puerto Azul, Ternate, Cavite using an illegal fishing method called “Danish Seine” or locally known as “hulbot-hulbot”. According to the Coast Guard, “Danish Seine” is a fishing method often used in commercial fishing which is strictly banned in the Philippine waters because of its tendency to destroy and damage the coral reefs, sea grass beds, and other marine life habitats pursuant to Section 92 of Republic Act 8550 (The Fisheries Code of the Philippines).
