Freedom of expression. Access to knowledge and information. Media development. These are all considered the building blocks of a knowledge-based society and are the main thrusts of UNESCO under the banner of Communication and Information. UNACOM pursues local initiatives aligned with these global advocacies.

Among the programmes supported by this sector are the Memory of the World Programme (MoW) and Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP), both for the recognition, promotion and conservation of documentary heritage.

The Commission also supports the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022-2032)— an initiative launched to raise awareness on Indigenous language preservation, revitalization and promotion.
