But the real clean up hasn’t even started. Let’s not get too excited over this initial feat. There’s still a lot of work to be done. Remember Manila Bay waters is worst than Boracay.
- Duterte creates Manila Bay Task ForceGeducos, Argyll B.; Unite, Betheena (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2019-02-22)President Duterte has ordered the creation of the Manila Bay Task Force that will expedite the rehabilitation, restoration, and conservation of the coastal and marine ecosystem of the Manila Bay. In Administrative Order No. 16 signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on February 19, the secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was designated as chair of the Task Force. The secretaries of the Interior (DILG) and Tourism (DOT) departments will serve as vice-chairpersons. The DENR is tasked to strictly enforce the Philippine Clean Water Act on the conduct of containment, removal, and clean operations, and the exercise of supervision and control on all aspects of water quality management.
- P.6 M sought for Albay coral reef damageDematera, Cet (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2018-08-15)The city government here has asked the owner of a cargo vessel that ran aground and destroyed around 200 square meters of coral reef in Albay Gulf to pay P665,000 in damages. Mayor Noel Rosal said the captain of MV Jerly Lily gave assurance yesterday that they would pay the amount. Rosal said the cargo vessel was loaded with copra when it ran aground in Pasig Reef off Barangay Arimbay.
- US pays P87m for Tubbataha reef damageBarcelo, Vito; Solmerin, Florante (Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2015-02-19)The Philippine government has received P87.03 million from the US government as payment for the damage caused by a US Navy minesweeper that ran aground on a protected coral reef two years ago, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday. The minesweeper USS Guardian ran aground and caused damage to the Tubbataha Reef, a World Heritage Site in Palawan, in 2013. “The compensation will be utilized for the protection and rehabilitation of Tubbataha Reef Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Portions of the fund will also be used to further enhance capability to monitor the area and prevent similar incidents in the future,” the DFA said in a statement.
- What lies beneath: exploring Benham Rise's unknown treasuresCinco, Maricar (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2017-03-18)Benham Rise, the underwater landmass northeast of Luzon that the United Nations declared part of the Philippines’ continental shelf, has been grabbing headlines because of the presence of Chinese ships that may or may not have been given permission to do research in the area, according to conflicting claims by President Duterte, Defense chief Delfin Lorenzana, as well as Foreign Affairs officials. What remains undisputed, however, are the possible trove of mineral and gas deposits about 3,000 meters below the water’s surface that have yet to be discovered. Sometimes referred to as the Benham Plateau, the landmass, described to have a craggy or rough surface, is bigger than Luzon or almost half the size of the Philippine’s total land area. It extends eastward off the provinces of Aurora and Isabel, and the Bicol region, but has always been connected to Luzon’s landmass through the Bicol and Palanan saddles.
- Enforcement boosted to protect Visayan SeaYap, Tara (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2018-03-06)The Iloilo provincial government is pushing for stronger law enforcement in protecting the Visayan Sea from illegal fishers. “We will not waver to effectively and efficiently enforce fishery laws and ordinances to preserve and rehabilitate the Visayan Sea,” said Iloilo Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.
