    Proposed Sual fish port inspected

    The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) recently conducted a site visit in this town for the planned construction of an improved PFDA-Sual Fish Port (PFDA-SFP). PFDA General Manager Atty. Glen A. Pangapalan revealed that it is one of the agency’s ongoing flagship projects and is under the national government’s “Build, Build, Build” program. Pangapalan led the site visit along with Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Agri-Industrialization and for Fisheries Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero.

    Sufficient fish supply assured amid COVID-19

    Despite the COVID-19 triggered disruptions in the country’s food supply chain, Filipinos will have an adequate supply of fish, a staple food for majority of the population, throughout the entire year, an official data showed. Based on Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ (BFAR) forecast, the country’s total fish supply would end at 3.35 million metric tons (MT), which would slightly exceed demand seen at 3.33 million MT. For the end of second quarter alone, the country will also enjoy an 11-day surplus equivalent to 101,792 MT of fish, with 934,920 MT supply exceeding the 833,128 MT demand.

    Red tide alert still on in Bataan coastal waters

    Red tide has plagued the coastal waters of Bataan for six months now and is showing no signs of waning. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) yesterday issued another appeal to the public to refrain from gathering and eating shellfish from one city and seven towns of Bataan. Red tide toxin, which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning remains present in these areas,†said Lanie Lamyong, information officer of the BFAR regional office.

    BFAR raises red tide alert in Biliran, Iloilo

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has raised the red tide alert over the coastal waters of Naval in Biliran Island Province and Gigantes Islands in Carles, Iloilo. Agriculture Undersecretary for Fisheries and BFAR Director Eduardo Gongona said all types of shellfish from these areas are not safe for human consumption. “Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking,” Gongona said.
