    Prices for vegetables, fish and even rice could shoot up by as much as 20 percent as a result of the damage wrought by super typhoon Karding, the Department of Agriculture (DA) warned Thursday. Agriculture Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban said in an interview that the country’s rice granary, Central Luzon, sustained severe damage during the typhoon, resulting in the loss of 20 percent of the standing crop.

    Rampant illegal fishing in Quezon waters alarms group

    Rampant destructive fishing methods were again reported in the bays of Tayabas and Lamon in Quezon province, prompting an environmental group to urge the local government to curb the illegal activities. Jay Lim, project officer of Tanggol Kalikasan (TK), said the resurgence of illegal fishing activities was confirmed by a local fisherman in this city’s coastal village of Dalahican along the Tayabas Bay. TK is a public interest law office that advocates environmental protection. A local fisherman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, blamed the presence of large commercial fishing operations for the dwindling catch in the bay area.

    Fish hatcheries needed in every province to boost supply — BFAR

    Conservation urged to save native catfish

    The bighead catfish (Clarias macrocephalus), one of two native catfish species, was once a popular meal and is found in lakes, ponds, and rice fields across the Philippines. Based on studies and anecdotal reports, it is now found only in Cagayan, Quezon, Palawan, Agusan del Sur, and Liguasan Marsh. The native catfish industry has been neglected in favor of the African catfish. “Most of our farmers are growing African catfish,” said Rosenio Pagador, an information specialist of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) based in Tigbauan, Iloilo.

    Agri chief assures Metro food supplies ‘more than enough'

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday assured the public that the community quarantine had not affected food supplies for Metro Manila. “We have determined that there is enough supply of all basic goods that can be traded in Metro Manila,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar told a news briefing in Quezon City. Fish demand is at 8,000 MT per week, with supply at 10,264 MT per week. The stocks come from Ilocos, Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) Central Luzon, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Philippine Fisheries Development Authority-Navotas.

    Taal fish feeding resumes as water quality improves

    Fish cage operators can now resume feeding their fish stocks in Taal Lake after tests showed improvements in the quality of water. Agriculture Secretary William Dar said tests conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from Jan. 14 to 30 revealed that the level of dissolved oxygen in Taal Lake, which is essential to fish growth and survival, had already improved. BFAR Calabarzon director Sammy Malvas said Taal water quality tests also showed that the sulfide level is within normal.

    Sperm whale stranded off Quezon town dies

    A sperm whale that had been stranded near a coastal village in the town of Calauag, Quezon province, died yesterday, an environment official of the province said. Manny Calayag, community coordinator of the Quezon-Environment and Natural Resources Office, said the sperm whale, one of the world’s largest animals, died around 7:30 a.m. in the shallow portion of the waters off Lamon Bay near the coast of Bangkorohan village. Calayag said experts from the provincial veterinary office and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) traveled to Calauag at dawn yesterday to help in the rescue operation.
