    Three minors were hospitalized after eating green shells contaminated with Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) or red tide Tuesday afternoon at Barangay San Ramon, Pilar, Capiz. Ronald Roa, fishery coordinator of the municipality of Pilar, confirmed that the green shells eaten by the two male siblings and their cousin were positive for red tide per examination by the doctor.

    The coastal waters of Roxas City and the towns of Pilar and Panay in this province remain positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP), according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).     Visayan Sea fishing ban lifted

    It’s open season again for fishing in the Visayan Sea. The three-month fishing ban from November 2019 to February 2020 was lifted on Sunday, Feb. 16. The ban covered herrings, mackerels and sardines. Now fishermen could catch them again, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6.

    Red tide alert still on in Bataan coastal waters

    Red tide has plagued the coastal waters of Bataan for six months now and is showing no signs of waning. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) yesterday issued another appeal to the public to refrain from gathering and eating shellfish from one city and seven towns of Bataan. Red tide toxin, which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning remains present in these areas,†said Lanie Lamyong, information officer of the BFAR regional office.

    The Dec. 5 bulletin showed that there are no red tide toxin in the waters of New Washington, Altavas and Batan in Aklan, Gigantes Group of Islands in Carles, Iloilo, and President Roxas, Pilar, Panay, Roxas City, Ivisan, and Sapian in Capiz. But BFAR warned residents of Palawan, Bataan, Masbate, Eastern Samar, and Western Samar of gathering and eating shellfishes. The bulletin showed that there are high levels of the red tide toxin these areas.
