    SEAFDEC backs PH gov't bid to put up feed mill plants

    SEAFDEC/AQD has pledged its support to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to construct commercial-scale aquaculture feed mills for cost-effective feed in strategic locations throughout Panay Island, as well as Luzon and Mindanao in the Philippines. “Development of aquaculture feed mill plants is one of BFAR’s approved projects and is set for implementation this year,” according to BFAR-6 director Remia Aparri. The project is under the National Fisheries Program. BFAR tapped the research center’s technical expertise, particularly on site selection, during a meeting between SEAFDEC/AQD and BFAR on 10 Jan. 2023. Chief Dan Baliao, Dr. Roger Edward Mamauag, SEAFDEC/AQD Feasibility Study team, Aparri, and BFAR-6 staff were present.

    P10 billion eyed for fisheries program

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday said it is in the final stage of getting the approval to implement the Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency (FishCoRe) Project worth $200 million (P10 billion) funded by the World Bank (WB). In a statement, the DA said the FishCoRe project will benefit about 500,000 fisherfolk and stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture sector or the so-called blue economy. The seven-year project, which is the first WB-funded project to be implemented with the DA's Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), primarily aims to support the scaling-up and modernization of the Philippine capture fisheries and aquaculture industry. This will be done through the provision of technical support and innovation, access to modern and resilient fisheries infrastructure and post-harvest facilities, and promotion of efficient connectivity and product value addition, among other initiatives

    Sufficient fish supply assured amid COVID-19

    Despite the COVID-19 triggered disruptions in the country’s food supply chain, Filipinos will have an adequate supply of fish, a staple food for majority of the population, throughout the entire year, an official data showed. Based on Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ (BFAR) forecast, the country’s total fish supply would end at 3.35 million metric tons (MT), which would slightly exceed demand seen at 3.33 million MT. For the end of second quarter alone, the country will also enjoy an 11-day surplus equivalent to 101,792 MT of fish, with 934,920 MT supply exceeding the 833,128 MT demand.
