    The stakeholders of the tuna fishing industry in General Santos City are pushing for the creation of a department for fisheries and aquatic resources to achieve the full potential of the country's fisheries sector. Currently, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, an agency responsible for the development, improvement, management, and conservation of the Philippine fisheries and aquatic resources, is under the Department of Agriculture. In a press conference on Monday for the 22nd National Tuna Congress on September 1-2, Rosanna Contreras, executive director of the Soccsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries Inc., said their initial proposal for a separate department for fisheries has not prospered.

    The lure of mindoro fishermen's ancient way

    Marginal fishermen in Mindoro Strait are on a roll in the the world’s yellow fin market, attracting buyers with their ancient practice of slapping the sea with their lines and beating expensive commercial operations using modern equipment such as sonars, sensors and nets. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the handline fisherman, who roam the Strait on outrigger boats, catch 70-kilo yellow fin tuna using “kawil” (hook, line and sinker), attracting pelagic fish such as tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi (dolphin fish) in their “payaw” or fish aggregating device. “Tuna buyers from European and Middle East countries as well as Japan and the United States are coming to Mamburao in droves. Mamburao is now the de facto tuna capital of the Philippines,” said Joselito Tiongson, site manager of the WWF.

    Sufficient fish supply assured amid COVID-19

    Despite the COVID-19 triggered disruptions in the country’s food supply chain, Filipinos will have an adequate supply of fish, a staple food for majority of the population, throughout the entire year, an official data showed. Based on Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ (BFAR) forecast, the country’s total fish supply would end at 3.35 million metric tons (MT), which would slightly exceed demand seen at 3.33 million MT. For the end of second quarter alone, the country will also enjoy an 11-day surplus equivalent to 101,792 MT of fish, with 934,920 MT supply exceeding the 833,128 MT demand.

    Pacquiao hails PH's fisherfolk

    Senator Manny Pacquiao hailed Saturday the country's fisherfolk for their invaluable contribution to both the local and national economy. He expressed tribute to the fisherfolk during the distribution and simple turn-over ceremony of 55 motorized banca to the beneficiaries at the fish port complex in Gen. Santos City. "We are gathered here today to fulfill our commitment to improve the lot of our people especially those who are in need," Pacquiao said. The 55 motorized bancas turned over to Sarangani and Gensan fisherfolk were part of the 1,000 motorized bancas to be distributed under the auspices of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Department of Agriculture.
