    Gokongwei firm adopts Boracay wetland

    After successfully partnering with private companies, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was able to push for the revival of four wetlands in Boracay Island. Recently, the DENR had sealed their partnership with the JG Summit Petrochemical Corp (JGSPC) with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the rehabilitation of Boracay’s Wetland No. 8 located in Brgy Manoc-manoc. Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, signed the MOA on behalf of the DENR along with the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Director Crisanta Marie Rodriguez, and on behalf of the JGSPC, president and CEO Patrick Henry Go and vice-president Marino Agbayani signed the MOA. This new development highlighted the wetland adoption as a positive step towards biodiversity conservation.

    Boracay's environmental woes

    Some dimwits online and elsewhere are trying to make light of Boracay Island’s environmental problems by spewing fallacies. One hilarious fallacy or lie is that lumot or green algae that bloom in the island’s shoreline are a good indication and essential to the beach area because it is the main source of the famed white sand. What?! Any kid in elementary or high school will tell these dimwits that lumot or green algae serve as food for marine life and an indicator of ecological balance or the lack of it.

    NEDA: DU30 right to close Boracay: Army after ‘minor incidents’ – commander

    The government was right to temporarily close off Boracay to tourists, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the shutdown of the island resort to pave the way for rehabilitation. He approved the recommendation of the Interior, Tourism and Environment departments to close Boracay for six months starting April 26.

    Boracay, which is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is set for its soft opening on October 26, was voted as second and described as “close to a tropical idyll as you’ll find in Southeast Asia with gentle coastlines and made-for-Instagram sunsets.” “We would like to take this opportunity to tell our tourists to manage their expectations on Boracay’s soft opening. We also encourage them to be mindful and responsible tourists of the island,” Secretary Romulo-Puyat added. Condé Nast also named Palawan as Asia’s third top island stating “Palawan is home to the otherworldly Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site worth the trip alone.”
