    Red tide still up in Aklan waters

    A red tide alert is still raised in Mambuquiao and Camanci in Batan town. In the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) shellfish bulletin on Nov. 24, samples collected in the coastal waters of Mambuquiao and Camanci are positive for red tide poisoning beyond the regulatory limit. The gathering and harvesting of bivalve shellfish and alamang are prohibited and not safe for human consumption.

    Heated tanks lead to productive milkfish spawning in cold months

    A premier fisheries research center in the country is promoting a simple technology to address the perennial shortage of milkfish fry that continues to hound fish farmers in the Philippines during the colder months of the year. The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD), a research center based in Iloilo, revealed that the facility succeeded in inducing milkfish breeders to spawn using thermal manipulation and is sharing this technology with fish farmers. “The shortage of milkfish seeds is more pron1ounced in the Philippines between November to February when the weather becomes too cold for breeders to lay eggs,” said SEAFDEC chief Dan Baliao, who further underscored that “thermal manipulation is necessary to help milkfish hatcheries stay productive during the four-month off-season by ensuring a continuous supply of seed.”

    W. Visayas coastal waters still red-tide free

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said coastal waters of Panay and Negros Islands’ remain safe from toxic red tide. In its Dec. 2 bulletin, BFAR issued no red tide advisory in the coastal waters of Aklan, Negros Occidental, Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, and Guimaras In Aklan, coastal waters of Altavas, Batan and New Washington in Batan Bay

    New community fish landing centers in Aklan

    Two community fish landing centers (CFLCs) were turned over in the towns of Tangalan and Numancia in Aklan. The CFLCs are under the Targeted Action to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation program of the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). The program is aimed at helping fishing communities by helping to increase their income.

    BFAR: WV coastal waters free from red tide toxin

    The Dec. 5 bulletin showed that there are no red tide toxin in the waters of New Washington, Altavas and Batan in Aklan, Gigantes Group of Islands in Carles, Iloilo, and President Roxas, Pilar, Panay, Roxas City, Ivisan, and Sapian in Capiz. But BFAR warned residents of Palawan, Bataan, Masbate, Eastern Samar, and Western Samar of gathering and eating shellfishes. The bulletin showed that there are high levels of the red tide toxin these areas.
