Data from the Fisherfolk Registration System (FishR) reveals that women make up a significant portion of registered fisherfolk in the region. Guimaras has the highest percentage of women fisherfolk at 40%, followed by Capiz at 39% and Iloilo at 38%.

Johnny Pimentel, a member of the House committee on ecology, said on Sunday. “Those figures from the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds, or IOPC Funds, are very preliminary. Additional claims from capture fishery alone have probably been submitted by now, but have not been aggregated and reported yet,” Pimentel said.

Due to climate change and the loss of interest among Iloilo’s seaweed farmers, production gradually decreased, according to the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO). To strengthen the local seaweed industry, the provincial government is hosting the first Iloilo Seaweed Summit this April 14 to 15 at the Grand Social Hall of Casa Real de Iloilo, said Dr. Ildefonso Toledo, PAO chief.
- 200 Antique fisherfolk to get materials to repair boats(Panay News, Inc., 2022-11-11)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 6 will provide repair materials worth P10,000 each to 200 fisherfolk whose boats were badly damaged during the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng” in the last week of October. BFAR Antique head Richard Cordero, in an interview Friday, said they were finalizing the damage report for the BFAR central office to provide repair materials so the fishermen can resume their livelihood. “Based on our initial report, there are 600 fisherfolk whose fishing boats were damaged, but we are prioritizing only 200 of them who really need the repair materials,” he said.

- BFAR urged to lead fight vs HB 7853Gomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2021-04-30)Environmental group Oceana, along with more than 1,100 fisherfolk groups across the country, urged Department of Agriculture (DA) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to lead the opposition to House Bill 7853 that will allow commercial fishing operations in the country’s municipal waters. “We need to uphold the law and complete the implementation of reforms under the amended Fisheries Code,” the groups said in a joint statement that was sent to the author of the bill, Cebu Third District Rep. Pablo John Garcia, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries. “Instead of supporting the artisanal fisherfolk improve their capacity and efficiency in their fishing efforts that will improve their livelihood and rise above from hunger and malnutrition, they will open up the municipal water to commercial fishing operations. All the efforts to increase production in fisheries while improving the life and livelihood of municipal fisherfolk will lead to nothing,” they further said.
- Antique to host 1st int'l fishing tourney in May(Panay News, Inc., 2020-02-23)The province of Antique gets to showcase its rich marine biodiversity when it hosts the 1st International Sports Fishing Tournament in May. “Sports fishing is another tourism product that we are promoting. When they go to Antique, they can experience fishing onboard a fishing boat,” said Flord Nicson Calawag, president of the Antique Eco-Tourism Association (AETA). The tournament, set on May 2-3, has two categories: amateur and professional anglers and registered municipal fisherfolk. Participants may use traditional trolling and bait fishing.
- Oil spill from Viet ship unlikely – PCGCanlas, Jomar (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2020-08-17)The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Monday said Antique waters were safe from possible oil spill from a Vietnamese-flagged cargo vessel. The MV Globe 6 ran aground in waters between Nagubat Island and Liwagao Island in Caluya, Antique on August 13, the PCG added in a statement. It had assisted the distressed vessel, which came from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to deliver rice to a port in Davao City.
