  • Iloilo fisherfolk, coastal LGUs oppose commercial fishing in municipal waters

    The provincial government, through the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAgrO), is compiling position papers from coastal municipalities, fisherfolk groups, and other concerned parties to formally oppose the Supreme Court (First Division) ruling allowing commercial fishing vessels to operate within the 15-kilometer municipal water zone. PAgrO head Dr. Ildefonso Toledo confirmed that submissions have started arriving at his office and are expected to increase in the coming days. He warned that allowing commercial fishing in municipal waters would severely impact small-scale fisherfolk, who rely on these areas for their livelihood.
  • Iloilo prov'l gov't aims to replicate Ajuy marine practices

    The provincial government is considering replicating the municipality of Ajuy’s best practices in marine conservation and coastal protection throughout the rest of Iloilo. The town recently placed first runner-up in the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) Awards organized by the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. As a result, it secured fisheries livelihood projects worth P18 million. “We aim to encourage and inspire other municipalities to participate in the upcoming MMK awards. I am confident that our fellow communities are already engaged in initiatives to protect our seas and coasts,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.
  • Iloilo eyes collab with SEAFDEC to maximize aquaculture production

    Iloilo's Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. is eyeing an institutional partnership with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center-Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC-AQD) to maximize the province’s aquaculture production. Defensor was the keynote speaker during the recent kickoff of the 50th anniversary celebration of SEAFDEC-AQD in Tigbauan town. The governor, SEAFDEC-AQD chief Dan Baliao, Agriculture Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban, and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6 director Remia Aparri also led the inauguration of two new facilities – the Black Tiger Shrimp Broodstock and Milkfish Larval Rearing.
