- BFAR staff gain practical skills in milkfish aquaculture at SEAFDEC(Panay News, Inc., 2025-04-15)Another batch of personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) trained at SEAFDEC/AQD on milkfish aquaculture from March 17 to 28, 2025 as part of the Philippines’ push to boost local production. The 12-day program gathered 14 personnel from various BFAR offices and facilities, including the Central Office and regional offices from Regions 3 (Central Luzon), 10 (Northern Mindanao), 11 (Davao), 12 (Soccsksargen), and 13 (Caraga). At the opening program, BFAR-3 Director Wilfredo Cruz emphasized the importance of a skilled workforce to support the National Bangus Development Program (NBDP) of the Philippines. “With this training, I hope we can reach our target and make the country self-sufficient in fry production,” he told the trainees.

Cynthia Villar. During a Senate hearing on Senate Bill No. 2417, which proposes the establishment of a similar feed mill plant in Barangay Bahit, Panay, Capiz, Villar questioned BFAR’s rationale for situating the feed mill at SEAFDEC. The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture, expressed frustration over the decision, emphasizing that feed mills are intended to benefit local fishermen and should be constructed in areas accessible to local government units (LGUs).
- No fish shortage: Western Visayas 125% fish sufficient - BFAR(Panay News, Inc., 2023-06-08)The campaign against illegal fishing is paying off. Western Visayas is “more than 100 percent sufficient” in fish, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). The region’s fish sufficiency is at 125 percent, Regional Director Remia Aparri told Panay News. She cited local government units (LGUs), partner government agencies, fisherfolk and other stakeholders for supporting BFAR’s campaign against illegal fishing and the annual three-month closed season observed in the Visayan Sea (November to February) to give fishes time to spawn, repopulate and grow.

The BSC Adopt-a-Village Project is a public-private-community partnership initiated as a pilot implementation of the BSC National Management Plan which aims to ensure the sustainability of crab resources and increase community engagement in the conservation and protection of the commodity and improvement of seafood watch rating.

Around 8 a.m. yesterday, July 4, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and various rescue groups refloated the patrol boat from the water.
- P1.4-M illegal fish seized in major anti-poaching opsBaylon, Jen (Panay News, Inc., 2023-11-16)In a significant move against illegal fishing, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) successfully conducted a week-long operation, culminating on Monday, Nov. 13. Illegally-caught fish valued at nearly P1.4 million were recovered. A big portion of the seizure, worth over P1.1 million, was from the coastal town of Concepcion were there’s a high incidence of illegal fishing.

Defensor was the keynote speaker during the recent kickoff of the 50th anniversary celebration of SEAFDEC-AQD in Tigbauan town. The governor, SEAFDEC-AQD chief Dan Baliao, Agriculture Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban, and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6 director Remia Aparri also led the inauguration of two new facilities – the Black Tiger Shrimp Broodstock and Milkfish Larval Rearing.
- SEAFDEC backs PH gov't bid to put up feed mill plants(Metropolitan Global PH Communications Co., 2023-01-29)SEAFDEC/AQD has pledged its support to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to construct commercial-scale aquaculture feed mills for cost-effective feed in strategic locations throughout Panay Island, as well as Luzon and Mindanao in the Philippines. “Development of aquaculture feed mill plants is one of BFAR’s approved projects and is set for implementation this year,” according to BFAR-6 director Remia Aparri. The project is under the National Fisheries Program. BFAR tapped the research center’s technical expertise, particularly on site selection, during a meeting between SEAFDEC/AQD and BFAR on 10 Jan. 2023. Chief Dan Baliao, Dr. Roger Edward Mamauag, SEAFDEC/AQD Feasibility Study team, Aparri, and BFAR-6 staff were present.
