- Fish cage development to boost catch, says DASimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2019-06-15)The Department of Agriculture and local fish importers have agreed to develop fish cage farming in the country to boost production. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol recently met with fisheries product importers where the latter agreed on establishing fish cages in selected coves determined by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. This is in line with the government’s efforts to boost local fish production while strengthening and protecting the local market.

Samar fishermen receive P30-M aidMarticio, Marie Tonette Grace (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2018-12-22)Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, together with Undersecretary for Fisheries Eduardo Gongona distributed six motorized fiberglass boats and other equipment worth P30 million to fishermen in Barangays Manaybanay, Burgos and Del Sur, in Mapanas town in Northern Samar. Aside from the boats, the Burgos Fisherfolk Association and Samahan ng mga Nagkakaisang Mangingisda Association of Mapanas also received six deep-sea payao and 60 multiple tuna handlines, as well as 16-hp marine engines from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). “Wa ko makalimot sa akong saad ninyo,” Piñol said as he revisited the fisherfolks and farmers in Mapanas recently.
- Iloilo gets P30-M agri loan fundSimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2017-09-09)The Department of Agriculture (DA) has allocated a P30 million loan fund for two towns in Iloilo to help improve the country’s lending for the agriculture sector. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said the department has allotted P20 million for Dumangas town and another P10 million for Passi City as part of the Production Loan Easy Access program. The program allows farmers and fisherfolks to borrow from P5,000 to P25,000 without any collateral and a six percent annual interest payable in at least two years.
- Fish output slightly down to 972,910 MT in Q3 – PSAGomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2018-11-19)The country's fish production slightly decreased in the third quarter of the year as output from commercial and municipal fisheries declined, the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) said. In its latest Fisheries Situation Report, the agency said total fish output stood at 972, 910 metric tons (MT)in the July-September period, just 0.4 percent lower from a year-ago level. Fish yielded by commercial fisheries dropped by 1.60 percent to 232, 810 MT from 236, 590 MT incurred in the same period last year.
- Importing galunggong will disadvantage 1.5M fisherfolk'(Panay News, Inc., 2018-09-01)The Department of Agriculture’s (DA) plan to import round scad, or galunggong every year will disadvantage some one and a half million small fisherfolk in the country, Sen. Cynthia Villar said. Villar, who chairs the Senate committee on agriculture and food, said imported galunggong will compete against the locally produced fish variety. “Kasi kapag nag-iimport tayo that is competition to our one and a half million fisherfolk in the municipal water na mahihirap,” she said on the sidelines of the 14th Agriculture and Fisheries Technology Forum in Mandaluyong City.
- Fishers group urges boycott of imported galunggongCervantes, Ding (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2018-08-27)A group of fishermen yesterday vowed to campaign for a nationwide boycott of imported galunggong (round scad), insisting that while the imports are expected to cost less than local harvest, they are a health hazard. “We urge local vendors, consumers and fishers not to patronize the imported products as they are health hazards and are surely of poor quality. Instead, we will promote locally caught marine and aquatic products, which are not only good in quality but will also help boost the local fishing industry,” said Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya). The group contradicted the claims of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources that galunggong to be imported are “low in formaldehyde.”
- Ban on Danish Seine fishing method strengthenedGomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2018-07-13)The nationwide ban on the use of the fishing device Danish Seine (hulbot-hulbot) that destroys marine habitats has been strengthened after the Department of Agriculture (DA) approved an order declaring mere possession of the material as a prime evidence for violation, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said on Monday. In a statement, BFAR said Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol signed the agency’s update to Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 246 in accordance with Republic Act (RA) 10654 on the banning of the operation of Danish Seine and Modified Danish Seine in Philippine waters. RA 10564 outlaws certain fishing methods deemed harmful to marine ecosystems.
- Pacquiao hails PH's fisherfolkRamos-Araneta, Macon (Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2017-12-17)Senator Manny Pacquiao hailed Saturday the country's fisherfolk for their invaluable contribution to both the local and national economy. He expressed tribute to the fisherfolk during the distribution and simple turn-over ceremony of 55 motorized banca to the beneficiaries at the fish port complex in Gen. Santos City. "We are gathered here today to fulfill our commitment to improve the lot of our people especially those who are in need," Pacquiao said. The 55 motorized bancas turned over to Sarangani and Gensan fisherfolk were part of the 1,000 motorized bancas to be distributed under the auspices of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Department of Agriculture.
- ‘No-nationality’ galunggong causes uproar over import planAraneta, Macon Ramos (Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2018-08-29)Round scad or “galunggong” do not have a “nationality,” and thus Filipinos should have no problems with this variety of fish that is imported from other countries to augment the local food supply, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said Tuesday. However, Senator Cynthia A. Villar exhorted the public not to eat galunggong—once regarded in the country as the poor man’s fish—as it could be laced with formalin or embalming fluid. In responding to critics of the government’s move to import galunggong, Piñol told ANC Headstart the Philippines has long imported many types of fish to augment its supply especially during the closed fishing season.
- UI law students to help protect Visayan Sea(Panay News, Inc., 2018-03-15)Students of the University of Iloilo's (UI) College of Law volunteered to help preserve the Visayan Sea. The college’s In Solidum Student Council presented to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. a manifesto offering support and help to the provincial government that has made it a priority to combat illegal fishing most especially in the waters of northern Iloilo. These waters are part of the Visayan Sea.
