  • Blue swimming crab model village launched in Manapla

    A model village for blue swimming crab (BSC) was launched in Barangay Tortosa, Manapla, Negros Occidental on Friday, September 27. The BSC Adopt-a-Village Project is a public-private-community partnership initiated as a pilot implementation of the BSC National Management Plan which aims to ensure the sustainability of crab resources and increase community engagement in the conservation and protection of the commodity and improvement of seafood watch rating.

    The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Command and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources are partnering with United States Agency for International Development to address the marine ecosystem threats in the West Philippine Sea. The move is pushed through the USAID’s “Fish Right Program” by the University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center and its local colleagues.
  • BFAR, USAID host workshop to battle illegal fishing

    The U.S. and Philippine governments launched on Wednesday, September 2, a workshop attended by 135 participants to measure and understand the negative impacts of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the country. Supported by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Fish Right program, experts from the University of the Philippines School of Statistics facilitated the online workshop on September 2-3, bringing together various sectors to increase understanding on IUU fishing at a national level. “This exercise is a critical first step to understanding the complex global threat that IUU fishing represents to ocean health and maritime security,” stated U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission John Law during the opening session of the workshop.

    AN online platform to enable Filipino fishermen to sell their produce to consumers amid the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) community quarantine was launched at Silliman University in Dumaguete City. Fish Tiangge is an online marketplace that was developed by the United States government through the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid) Fish Right project. The Fish Right program is being implemented by the University of Rhode Island in partnership with local universities and nongovernment organizations.
  • USAID to help NegOcc fishery industry

    The fishery industry of Negros Occidental is seen to get a boost through the partnership of the academe and the business sector with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Frank Carbon, chief executive officer of Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI), said Monday the possible collaboration will cover the seas in the southern part of the province facing Hinoba-an, Sipalay City, and Cauayan, which are abundant in high-value fish products, such as tuna. Blue swimming crabs are also found in the Visayan Sea, particularly the areas from Talisay City to Escalante City in Negros Occidental, he added.
  • US-BFAR partner to improve fish production in the Visayas

    The United States government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have jointly launched “Fish Right,” a P1.3 billion five-year sustainable fisheries project aimed to increase fish biomass and strengthen management of marine areas in some parts of the Visayas region. According to the US Embassy in Manila, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project will focus on addressing biodiversity threats, improving marine ecosystem governance, and increasing the number and weight of fish in the Calamianes Island Group, Visayan Seas, and South Negros. The partnership between the US government and BFAR, an agency under Department of Agriculture (DA) is expected to benefit two million people who depend onmarine resources for food and income, the Embassy said.
  • LGUs told to protect flora, fauna in Iloilo

    Manila graced the 3rd Iloilo Biodiversity and Watershed Week opening ceremonies, Nov. 21, 2016 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led by lawyer Arturo Cangrejo led the celebration. Iloilo Vice-Governor Christine Garin and PENRO DENR-Iloilo Raul Lotilla also graced the opening ceremonies. An exhibit features the environment conservation and protection initiatives of the Province of Iloilo, DENR and its partners, including Central Philippine University, University of the Philippines Visayas, SEAFDEC, USAID, Department of Education, Iloilo Watershed Management Council, Metro Iloilo Water District, among others.
