- PCG continues cleanup of M/V Princess of the Stars oil spillMacairan, Evelyn (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2010-06-06)The Philippine Coast Guard is continuing its clean up operations on the 400 liters of oily mixture from the sunken M/V Princess of the Stars that spilled out into the coastline of San Fernando, Romblon on May 31. In a statement, the PCG reported that the oil spill came out of the engine room as they were pumping air to refloat the vessel on May 31. The PCG-Marine Environment Protection Unit personnel conducted a shoreline inspection and discovered traces of oil spill.
- Law enforcers also behind illegal fishing in Lingayen GulfSotelo, Yolanda (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2015-02)There must be something about the coastal town of San Fabian in Pangasinan which attracts tourists, beach lovers, sea creatures and even unscrupulous fishermen. All are welcome, Mayor Constante Agbayani said, except fishermen who come with illegal fishing gear, explosives and other destructive means to catch fish that abound in the town’s waters. Beachgoers and tourists are lured by the calm and shallow water while sea creatures, like whale sharks (butanding), regularly come to graze whenever the Lingayen Gulf is teeming with tiny fish and shrimps.
- Solar-lighted coral beads used in AlbayDematera, Cet; Amo, Celso (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2013-08-04)The country's first underwater solar-powered and coral-beaded rosary was installed in Albay Gulf yesterday. Dubbed as "Coral Genesis," the 60 coral beads with attached solar panels, bulbs and a concrete crucifix forming a 65-meter rosary was installed 25 feet deep in the coastal waters of Sto. Domingo town in Albay. Martin Reynoso, chairman of Jaycees Legazpi chapter which sponsored the project, said the giant coral rosary automatically lights up at night.
- Oil sludge removal starts in IlocosSotelo, Yolanda; Cardinoza, Gabriel; Arzadon, Cristina; Balbin, Leoncio Jr. (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2013-02-28)Using shovels, rakes and dust pans, and even spoons, government employees, residents, fishermen and volunteers from different towns of La Union tediously scooped and gathered the coagulated oil that had reached coastal areas here. Reports from local governments and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said the gel-like substance or sludge from a sunken Myanmar vessel or another ship had reached as far as the coastline of Paoay, Ilocos Norte. In La Union, at least 200 sacks of the sludge had been collected from the towns of San Juan, Luna, Bangar, Balaoan, Bactonan and San Fernando City in the last three days, said Ranilo Ipac, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
- No oil spill from stranded barge in Antique - PCG(Panay News, Inc., 2019-08-07)Authorities here said they have not detected any oil spill from the stranded barge off the coast of this capital town. The Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) clarified on Monday that they have not found any oil spill when they inspected the stranded barge. ENRO provincial head Vivian Marfil said there was no oil spill contrary to the report of residents living along the coastline. The inspection was done on July 30.
- Sea trips for small vessels halted due to gale warningYasa, Dolly (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2019-08-06)A gale warning was issued morning of Aug 5, 2019 in Western Visayas, forcing the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to again cancel sea trips between Bacolod City and Iloilo City. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) said Western Visayas is expected to experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. PAGASA said the region can also experience 45 to 63 kilometers per hour winds, with sea conditions from rough to very rough and wave heights measured between 2.8 to 4.5 meters.
- Regular checking of all Bacolod sea vessels urgedSinguay, Mae (Panay News, Inc., 2019-08-13)The Sangguniang Panlungsod here urged the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) to conduct a regular inspection of all sea vessels plying the waters of this city. “The PCG and Marina should ensure that the sea vessels are properly equipped with adequate life-saving and communications instruments during their operations,” said councilor Bartolome Orola. He further said the recent capsizing of three boats in Iloilo Straight served as a lesson to strengthen the city’s maritime safety policies.
- Coastguard(Panay News, Inc., 2019-08-06)Every time there is a sea disaster, we focus our attention to the coastguard. Are the expectations for it to do well equal to the powers it is vested with? The Philippine Coast Guard must enforce laws, promulgate and administer rules and regulations for the promotion and safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment and resources. It must render aid to persons and vessels in distress and conduct search and rescued in case of marine accident within the maritime jurisdiction of the country. It must enforce and assist in the implementation of laws on fishery, immigration, tariff and customs, forestry, firearms and explosives, dangerous drugs, trafficking of women and children. It must enforce and assist in the maintenance of maritime law enforcement and security based on the applicable laws.
- The Manila Bay crisisde Guzman, Sara Soliven (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2019-02-24)The recent photos taken of Manila Bay showed the beautiful sunset and happy people strolling by the bay and a few even bold enough to take a dip in the seemingly clean waters. But the real clean up hasn’t even started. Let’s not get too excited over this initial feat. There’s still a lot of work to be done. Remember Manila Bay waters is worst than Boracay.
- Coast Guard to secure today’s ‘bangcarera’Sornito, Ime (Panay News, Inc., 2019-02-10)The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Iloilo mobilized 40 personnel to secure the bangcarera miniature paraw race at Port San Jose in Barangay Hoskyn, Jordan, Guimaras today. The PCG deployment began on Saturday, the opening of the 47th Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta Festival. PCG-Iloilo commander Lieutenant Rodolfo dela Peña said their personnel will “provide crowd control” during the annual event that gathers hundreds of spectators.
