    DA, FAO explore strategies to boost agri-fishery sector

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) discussed how the Philippine agri-fishery sector could improve food security and the economy. During the bilateral meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, DA Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. and FAO Director Quo Dongyu shared that one of the Philippines’ main agenda is to strengthen the agri-food systems and focus on the aquaculture sector.

    There was this story of a school girl whose baon every school day was a cup of rice sprinkled with patis or fish sauce. That was all her parents could afford, the story on social media said. The basic Filipino diet is rice and fish. Fish and fish products provide the bulk of protein for more than half of all Filipinos when they eat. Galunggong or scad was the poor man’s fish when I was growing up. But today, the poor can no longer afford galunggong. It is now imported.

    PCR test, quarantine for PHL shrimp vs viruses

    Years before returning travelers were required to quarantine or get polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for Covid-19, a research center is rigorously requiring the same for the country’s shrimp to ward off viruses and other pathogens that cause billions of dollars in losses to shrimp farms worldwide. These are being done in a birthing center for tiger shrimp at a seaside town in Iloilo, a news release from the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (Seafdec/AQD) said. After releasing their eggs, the mother shrimp, called spawners, are tested for the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), monodon baculovirus, infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus, yellow head virus, acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease and the parasite Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei.

    Fisheries expert bucks BFAR conversion into staff bureau

    The fisheries sector will once again join the non-performing assets of the government if the Department of Agriculture will include the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in its rationalization or "rat" plan, according to Wilfredo Yap, an aquaculture technical consultant of ADB-assisted aquaculture development technical assistance project. Yap, a former FAO expert and research head of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center or SEAFDEC, said that from 1987 to 1998 the average annual growth rate of aquaculture by volume of production dropped to only 5.4 percent, from 13.3 percent during the previous 10-year period (1977 to 1986) and capture fisheries to only one percent from the previous 2.8 percent. "The rationalization plan is supposed to eliminate duplication of functions inherent in the present commodity approach of the DA organization. In reality, fisheries cannot and should not be considered a mere commodity like rice, corn, coconut and sugarcane," he pointed out.

    Ban on Danish Seine fishing method strengthened

    The nationwide ban on the use of the fishing device Danish Seine (hulbot-hulbot) that destroys marine habitats has been strengthened after the Department of Agriculture (DA) approved an order declaring mere possession of the material as a prime evidence for violation, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said on Monday. In a statement, BFAR said Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol signed the agency’s update to Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 246 in accordance with Republic Act (RA) 10654 on the banning of the operation of Danish Seine and Modified Danish Seine in Philippine waters. RA 10564 outlaws certain fishing methods deemed harmful to marine ecosystems.
