    Fish supply in Davao stable despite yearly fishing ban in Davao Gulf

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources - Davao Region (Bfar-Davao) said there should still be enough fish production despite the yearly ban on fishing small pelagic fishes in Davao Gulf from June to August. “Most probably sa isda sa dagat maapektohan ta but it should be absorbed sa aquaculture nato (We might be affected regarding the number of fishes sourced from the sea by that ban, but the fish production will be backed by our aquaculture),” Raul Millena, Bfar-Davao regional director said in an interview.

    SC: No violation of mandamus in dolomite dumping on bay

    The Supreme Court has junked the petition of the Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party seeking to intervene in the Manila Bay case, with a plea to cite the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in contempt for dumping dolomite sand—said to be hazardous to health and the environment —on Manila Bay. In an En Banc resolution promulgated on November 17, 2020, the Court held that the case has been rendered final and executory and that its jurisdiction is limited only to the full implementation of the decision. Despite the dolomite sand controversy, the Court insisted that it has not found any violation of the continuing mandamus it issued more than 10 years ago mandating concerned government agencies to rehabilitate the Manila Bay.

    Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 5, meanwhile, reported an initial 20 metric tons of tilapia valued at P2.1 million were lost. BFAR-5’s Regional Fisheries Laboratory conducted water sampling in six villages — Iraya, Ibayugan, Tambo, Cabatuan, Salvacion and Sta. Elena. Results showed low dissolved oxygen (DO), ranging from 0.18 to 4.37PPM, and very high ammonia (ranging from 7.58 to 10,679 mg/L) content in Lake Buhi. Normal and tolerable ranges of DO are below 5PPM and ammonia at only 0.050 mg/L or lower.

    Twenty years ago this month a band of law students and conscientious citizens filed an ambitious lawsuit to make the government clean up Manila Bay. At the time, Jan. 1999, people already were complaining about the stench, litter, and color of the water. For water to be swimmable, bacteria level must be no more than 100 units per cubic meter, says environment lawyer Tony Oposa. Yet Manila Bay bacteria back then was already an alarming one million units per cubic meter.

    UI law students to help protect Visayan Sea

    Students of the University of Iloilo's (UI) College of Law volunteered to help preserve the Visayan Sea. The college’s In Solidum Student Council presented to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. a manifesto offering support and help to the provincial government that has made it a priority to combat illegal fishing most especially in the waters of northern Iloilo. These waters are part of the Visayan Sea.
