    Law reviving salt industry to strengthen PHL food security - group

    84% of oil spill affected shoreline 'cleaned'

    Over 84 percent of the coastline affected by the oil spill in the waters off Oriental Mindoro due to a sunken oil tanker has already been cleaned up. In a report to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said as of May 10, of the 74.71 kilometers of affected coastline, 62.95 kilometers, or 84.26 percent which covers the municipalities of Bongabong, Roxas, Mansalay, Bulalacao, San Teodoro, Baco, and Puerto Galera, has been cleaned.

    PCAARRD’s ‘Kontra COVID-19’ initiative

    The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) initiated the GALING PCAARRD Kontra COVID-19 Program in response to the recent pandemic outbreak of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19). The “GALING” or Good Agri-Aqua Livelihood Initiatives towards National Goals is also a Filipino term, which means Healing (from COVID-19) and Excellence, which resonates with PCAARRD’s tagline, Excellence in aquatic and natural resources research innovations. When pronounced with a slow accent, the word “galing” also means from, denoting that the technology offerings are from the various research and development (R&D) initiatives of the DOST-PCAARRD.

    Asia still top shrimp producer

    Asia has maintained its lead position as the world’s top shrimp producer. Thailand continues to dominate the trade, followed by China and Indonesia. From No. 3, the Philippines has nosedived to No. 8. This information on the shrimp industry was presented by aquaculture expert Wilfredo Yap during the Third National Shrimp Congress held recently in Bacolod City. The scientific forum was organized by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), Philippine Shrimp Association (PHILSHRIMP), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Board of Investment (BOI), and Negros Prawn Producers Marketing Cooperative, Inc. (NPPMCI).

    Duterte creates Manila Bay Task Force

    President Duterte has ordered the creation of the Manila Bay Task Force that will expedite the rehabilitation, restoration, and conservation of the coastal and marine ecosystem of the Manila Bay. In Administrative Order No. 16 signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on February 19, the secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was designated as chair of the Task Force. The secretaries of the Interior (DILG) and Tourism (DOT) departments will serve as vice-chairpersons. The DENR is tasked to strictly enforce the Philippine Clean Water Act on the conduct of containment, removal, and clean operations, and the exercise of supervision and control on all aspects of water quality management.
