  • NGO calls for post-harvest support in line with sardine management plan

    OCEANA Philippines called on the government to fully implement the National Sardines Management Plan with post-harvest facilities and support for fisherfolk. In a statement, the non-government organization (NGO) urged the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and local government units to build more such infrastructure and support fisherfolk in bringing their product to market. Oceana Vice-President Gloria Estenzo Ramos said that fisherfolk will benefit from keeping spoilage to a minimum and increasing incomes by adding value to the basic sardine product.
  • Illegal fishing

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 6 simulated an apprehension of an illegal commercial fishing vessel Thursday in Iloilo City for the benefit of judges and prosecutors. The goal was to make the courts more appreciative of the anti- illegal fishing campaign of the government and thus, hopefully, make decisions favorable to the preservation of our marine resources.
  • LGUs, Oceana beef up monitoring of municipal waters

    International non-government organization Oceana and the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) have agreed to further strengthen the monitoring of municipal waters and protect them from illegal fishing. Oceana and LMP recently renewed their partnership. The management of municipal waters is devolved to coastal municipal and city local government units in accordance with the Local Government Code of the Philippines and the Fisheries Code of the Philippines.
  • Oceana sues gov't over vessel monitoring system

    Oceana Philippines is set to sue the government for failure to install vessel monitoring for all commercial fishing vessels. The company said it would proceed with its plan to file a continuing mandamus against the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources despite the latter's issuance of Fisheries Administrative Order 260. Continuing mandamus is a writ issued by a court in an environmental case directing any agency to perform an act decreed by final judgement is fully satisfied.
