    Creating communal value through marine life protection

    ACEN’s Guimaras Wind Corporation (GWC) partnered with the Municipality of Dumangas to lead a pioneering coastal project with the goal of rehabilitating over 90 hectares of fish sanctuary and installing over 200 artificial reefs along the Dumangas Strait. To sustainably cultivate marine biodiversity along the coast of Western Visayas, GWC joined the representatives of the local government in a ceremony last November 16, 2021 to officially commence the project. Present in the event were Mayor Ronaldo Golez, the department heads of Dumangas LGU, the Bantay Dagat coalition, Dumangas Police Station and the Philippine Coast Guard, along with the GWC management team. Last year, ACEN, the Ayala group’s listed energy platform, signed a memorandum of agreement with the local government to initiate the development of artificial reefs through GWC as a key strategy to enhance coastal fisheries.

    Puerto Galera: Shoring up tourism, marine ecosystem

    For centuries, the bucolic town of Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro has been one of the archipelago’s proverbial best-kept secrets, with its lush forests, powdery beaches and rich underwater world. Literally meaning “port of galleons” in Spanish, Puerto Galera then hosted ships that would drop anchor on its coves for shelter before proceeding to its Manila-Acapulco route. The world would hear first of its allure in 1973, when it was declared by the Unesco as a Man and Biosphere Reserve, a prestigious global list of places known for their exceptional biodiversity. Another accolade came in 2005 when it was inducted into the Most Beautiful Bays of the World Club, a 27-nation Paris-based non-government organization. With its remarkable profusion of aquatic life, Puerto Galera would be named by conservationists as the “center of the center” of marine biodiversity with its strategic location in the heart of the world’s “Coral Triangle” in Southeast Asia.

    MPIF commits P1.5M for Puerto Galera’s Marine Protection, Inspection and Conservation Guardians

After commemorating its 10th year, Shore It Up has chosen to revisit and deepen its commitment to Puerto Galera, an old SIU community partner and the center of marine biodiversity. Known as a designated UNESCO Man and the Biosphere reserve and the Number One hub amongst dive enthusiasts in the country, Puerto Galera boasts of over 30 dive sites that have been and are still popular within the diving community. Divers from across the country and the world travel to experience the one-of-a-kind diving experience in this municipality.

    Artificial reefs go a long way in saving the sea

    Artificial reef projects are being expand in areas of Brgy. Damilisan, Brgy. Lanutan, and Brgy. Gines-Calampitao in Miagao, Iloilo to save its marine ecosystem. Using a P384,000 budget, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 6 initiated the first artificial reef project in 2011 at Damilisan village. “The establishment of the project was completed in the year 2013, with the deployment of 250 jackstone-type artificial reefs in Damilisan,” said Eden Nequia, agricultural technologist of the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist-Fisheries in Miagao.
