The Japanese Embassy in Manila said the damage done to coral reefs, presumably by Chinese boats in Rozul (Iroquois) Reef was “very alarming news.” “Our oceans are the lifeblood of our plant, and coral reefs are its colorful heartbeat. Let’s preserve and protect these vital ecosystems for generations to come,” Japan’s Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko said on his X social media account.
- Fish catch down 70%Cariaso, Bella; Macairan, Evelyn; Felipe, Cecille Suerte; Lee-Brago, Pia (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2023-09-19)Fish catch in the West Philippine Sea has gone down by 70 percent since 2020, and further decline is expected amid reports of massive poaching of corals by the Chinese, a militant fishers’ group warned yesterday. Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) national chairman Fernando Hicap raised the warning in a radio interview, in the wake of reports of plunder of corals in Rozul Reef, believed perpetrated by the Chinese. Corals are breeding grounds for marine life. Reports from fisherfolk – particularly from Zambales – have indicated 70 percent decline in fish catch “amid the illegal activities of Chinese fishing vessels,” Hicap said.
- PCG removes floating barrier in Bajo de MasinlocSadongdong, Martin (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2023-09-27)The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), on orders of President Mrcos, removed the floating barrier installed by China in Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough or Panatag Shoal, near Zambales. National Task Force for West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) Chairman and National Security Adviser Eduardo Año instructed the PCG to execute a "special operation" to remove the floating barrier which obstructed the southeast entrance of Bajo de Masinloc and prevented Filipino fishermen from entering the shoal.
- WPS marine ecosystem threats resolution eyedKabagani, Lade (Concept & Information Group, Inc., 2022-10-30)The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Command and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources are partnering with United States Agency for International Development to address the marine ecosystem threats in the West Philippine Sea. The move is pushed through the USAID’s “Fish Right Program” by the University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center and its local colleagues.
- Fishers group rejects more US military bases in PHFernandez, Daniza; Go, Joshua (Panay News, Inc., 2022-11-24)A fishers’ group rejected on Tuesday further construction of United States (US) military bases in the Philippines and accused Vice President Kamala Harris of aiming to anger China with her visit. The Armed Forces of the Philippines said that the US is looking into building Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement facilities in five more locations throughout the archipelago. These additional sites are seen to bolster security cooperation between the two countries and provide extra protection for the Philippines.
