- Taal fish feeding resumes as water quality improvesSimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2019-02-09)Fish cage operators can now resume feeding their fish stocks in Taal Lake after tests showed improvements in the quality of water. Agriculture Secretary William Dar said tests conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from Jan. 14 to 30 revealed that the level of dissolved oxygen in Taal Lake, which is essential to fish growth and survival, had already improved. BFAR Calabarzon director Sammy Malvas said Taal water quality tests also showed that the sulfide level is within normal.
- Fish cage development to boost catch, says DASimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2019-06-15)The Department of Agriculture and local fish importers have agreed to develop fish cage farming in the country to boost production. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol recently met with fisheries product importers where the latter agreed on establishing fish cages in selected coves determined by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. This is in line with the government’s efforts to boost local fish production while strengthening and protecting the local market.
- Iloilo gets P30-M agri loan fundSimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2017-09-09)The Department of Agriculture (DA) has allocated a P30 million loan fund for two towns in Iloilo to help improve the country’s lending for the agriculture sector. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said the department has allotted P20 million for Dumangas town and another P10 million for Passi City as part of the Production Loan Easy Access program. The program allows farmers and fisherfolks to borrow from P5,000 to P25,000 without any collateral and a six percent annual interest payable in at least two years.
- Oceana sues gov't over vessel monitoring systemSimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2018-10-20)Oceana Philippines is set to sue the government for failure to install vessel monitoring for all commercial fishing vessels. The company said it would proceed with its plan to file a continuing mandamus against the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources despite the latter's issuance of Fisheries Administrative Order 260. Continuing mandamus is a writ issued by a court in an environmental case directing any agency to perform an act decreed by final judgement is fully satisfied.
- Gov't crafts masterplan for eel industry developmentSimeon, Louise Maureen (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2017-12-02)The Department of Agriculture (DA) is investing around P20 million to develop the local eel industry, with a focus on the sustainable utilization and conservation of resources. The DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is formulating a master plan for the nationwide development of the industry and implementation of sub-activities that will start next year. “The plan is focused on the development of studies on the culture of eel, nursery grow-out, feed formulation and farming systems, and sustainable resource utilization,” said Evelyn Ame, DA-BFAR national eel focal person.
