- BFAR urged to lead fight vs HB 7853Gomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2021-04-30)Environmental group Oceana, along with more than 1,100 fisherfolk groups across the country, urged Department of Agriculture (DA) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to lead the opposition to House Bill 7853 that will allow commercial fishing operations in the country’s municipal waters. “We need to uphold the law and complete the implementation of reforms under the amended Fisheries Code,” the groups said in a joint statement that was sent to the author of the bill, Cebu Third District Rep. Pablo John Garcia, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries. “Instead of supporting the artisanal fisherfolk improve their capacity and efficiency in their fishing efforts that will improve their livelihood and rise above from hunger and malnutrition, they will open up the municipal water to commercial fishing operations. All the efforts to increase production in fisheries while improving the life and livelihood of municipal fisherfolk will lead to nothing,” they further said.
- BFAR assures nonstop fight against illegal fishingGomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2020-04-07)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Monday assured its continuous monitoring, control and surveillance of the country’s waters to counter illegal fishing attempts of groups or individuals trying to take advantage of the present situation amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. In a statement, the BFAR said several apprehensions have been made by the agency’s Regional Fisheries Resources Protection Groups, the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine National Police–Maritime Group in the last two weeks amid the implementation of enhanced community quarantine all over Luzon and lockdown of several cities and municipalities.
- Agri chief assures Metro food supplies ‘more than enough'Gomez, Eireene Jairee; Valente, Catherine S. (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2020-03-14)The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday assured the public that the community quarantine had not affected food supplies for Metro Manila. “We have determined that there is enough supply of all basic goods that can be traded in Metro Manila,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar told a news briefing in Quezon City. Fish demand is at 8,000 MT per week, with supply at 10,264 MT per week. The stocks come from Ilocos, Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) Central Luzon, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Philippine Fisheries Development Authority-Navotas.
- PSA: Fish output up 0.9% in Q1Gomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2019-05-17)The country’s total fish production grew 0.9 percent to 1.01 million metric tons (MMT) in the first quarter of 2019 compared to year-ago output, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said. The figure, however, was significantly lower than the 2-percent growth forecast set by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA). In its latest Fisheries Situation Report, PSA said growth was seen in commercial fisheries and municipal fisheries subsectors while a decline was noted in aquaculture.

BFAR said Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar; Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur; coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol; Puerto Princesa Bay, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan; and the coastal waters of Pampanga and Bataan (Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal) were still positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond the regulatory limit.

BFAR National Director Eduardo Gongona said the country had a “steady” supply of fish. “Our imported galunggong (round scad) has arrived in our fishing ports and bulk of these were already distributed to various markets. So why are prices still high? It’s mainly because of the middlemen or the in-between,” Gongona said.

In its latest Fisheries Situation Report, the agency said total fish output stood at 972, 910 metric tons (MT)in the July-September period, just 0.4 percent lower from a year-ago level. Fish yielded by commercial fisheries dropped by 1.60 percent to 232, 810 MT from 236, 590 MT incurred in the same period last year.
- Ban on Danish Seine fishing method strengthenedGomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2018-07-13)The nationwide ban on the use of the fishing device Danish Seine (hulbot-hulbot) that destroys marine habitats has been strengthened after the Department of Agriculture (DA) approved an order declaring mere possession of the material as a prime evidence for violation, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said on Monday. In a statement, BFAR said Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol signed the agency’s update to Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 246 in accordance with Republic Act (RA) 10654 on the banning of the operation of Danish Seine and Modified Danish Seine in Philippine waters. RA 10564 outlaws certain fishing methods deemed harmful to marine ecosystems.
