    The stakeholders of the tuna fishing industry in General Santos City are pushing for the creation of a department for fisheries and aquatic resources to achieve the full potential of the country's fisheries sector. Currently, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, an agency responsible for the development, improvement, management, and conservation of the Philippine fisheries and aquatic resources, is under the Department of Agriculture. In a press conference on Monday for the 22nd National Tuna Congress on September 1-2, Rosanna Contreras, executive director of the Soccsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries Inc., said their initial proposal for a separate department for fisheries has not prospered.

    The lure of mindoro fishermen's ancient way

    Marginal fishermen in Mindoro Strait are on a roll in the the world’s yellow fin market, attracting buyers with their ancient practice of slapping the sea with their lines and beating expensive commercial operations using modern equipment such as sonars, sensors and nets. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the handline fisherman, who roam the Strait on outrigger boats, catch 70-kilo yellow fin tuna using “kawil” (hook, line and sinker), attracting pelagic fish such as tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi (dolphin fish) in their “payaw” or fish aggregating device. “Tuna buyers from European and Middle East countries as well as Japan and the United States are coming to Mamburao in droves. Mamburao is now the de facto tuna capital of the Philippines,” said Joselito Tiongson, site manager of the WWF.

    Fish output slightly down to 972,910 MT in Q3 – PSA

    The country's fish production slightly decreased in the third quarter of the year as output from commercial and municipal fisheries declined, the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) said. In its latest Fisheries Situation Report, the agency said total fish output stood at 972, 910 metric tons (MT)in the July-September period, just 0.4 percent lower from a year-ago level. Fish yielded by commercial fisheries dropped by 1.60 percent to 232, 810 MT from 236, 590 MT incurred in the same period last year.

    Regulation on tuna fishing burdensome

    While fishing is one of the major industries in the Philippines’ agriculture, fisheries, and forestry sector, its contribution to the economy is still minimal—only 1.7 percent of the gross domestic product. The study authored by PIDS president Gilberto Llanto, research analyst Maria Kristina Ortiz, and former supervising research specialist Cherry Ann Madriaga said the industry’s current regulatory framework is burdensome. The authors mapped out the regulations imposed on the industry and identified those that are unnecessary and too burdensome for the key players.
