  • WPS fishers to get P80-M assistance

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will provide P80 million in livelihood assistance to Filipinos fishing in the West Philippine Sea. The amount will be spent on fishing equipment such as bancas, payao, lambaklad, fishing gears or paraphernalia, seaweeds propagation gears and post-harvest equipment, BFAR head of Information and Fisherfolk Coordination Unit and spokesperson Nazario Briguera said at the weekly Laging Handa press briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday. Fuel subsidy for municipal and commercial fishing boats will also be provided.

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said the Philippines must comply with a World Trade Organization (WTO) ban on fishing subsidies, which is designed to deter illegal fishing, even amid pressure from fishing organizations to provide government support for fisherfolk. Demosthenes R. Escoto, BFAR officer-in-charge, said that the WTO agreement against subsidies seeks to deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF) and to restore overfished populations.

    2,599 qualified beneficiaries in the province already received the Cash and Food Subsidy For Marginal Farmers and Fisherfolks (CFSMFF) of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – Provincial Fisheries Office as of Feb. 3. “We are conducting the distribution daily to complete the 5,471 vouchers to qualified recipients by February 16,” said BFAR – Provincial Fisheries Office Public Information Officer Lorelyn Ofalla. The CFSMFF includes P3,000 cash that can be claimed thru a money transfer service and P2,000.00 worth of foods composed of 25-kilo of rice, two trays of egg and three kilograms of dressed chicken.
