    3-month closed season begins in Visayan Sea

    The Visayan Sea will be closed to fishing from November 15 to February 15 next year to ensure the conservation of the fish species in the area. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Western Visayas said that the three-month hiatus, known as ‘Ang Pahuway sang Baybay’ (The Rest of the Sea), is in line with Fisheries Administrative Order No. 167-3.

    BFAR imposes 3-month fishing ban in Visayan sea

    For the next three months, fishing of some species at the Visayan Sea would be prohibited, said the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Visayas (BFAR-7). Starting on Nov. 15 until Feb. 15, 2023, fishers would not be allowed to catch pelagic species such as sardines, herrings and mackerels from the Visayan Sea to allow them to spawn and flourish in number, BFAR-7 said in a social media post on Thursday. The ban, which was based on the Fisheries Administrative Order No. 167-3 issued in 2013, was also intended to sustain the livelihood of small-scale or municipal fishers.

    Heated tanks lead to productive milkfish spawning in cold months

    A premier fisheries research center in the country is promoting a simple technology to address the perennial shortage of milkfish fry that continues to hound fish farmers in the Philippines during the colder months of the year. The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD), a research center based in Iloilo, revealed that the facility succeeded in inducing milkfish breeders to spawn using thermal manipulation and is sharing this technology with fish farmers. “The shortage of milkfish seeds is more pron1ounced in the Philippines between November to February when the weather becomes too cold for breeders to lay eggs,” said SEAFDEC chief Dan Baliao, who further underscored that “thermal manipulation is necessary to help milkfish hatcheries stay productive during the four-month off-season by ensuring a continuous supply of seed.”

    3-month fishing ban on Visayan Sea ends in Feb.

    The closed season in the Visayan Sea for sardines, herrings and mackerels that started on Nov. 15, 2018 would end next month. “Prohibiting fishers from catching them will increase the population of these species. It is really for fishers so they can have increased catch and increased income,” said Regional Director Remia Aparri of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). The closed season will run until Feb. 15, stated BFAR’s Fisheries Administrative Order 167-3.
