    SMPC distributes seaweed propagules to Caluya farmers

    Integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC), in its continued effort to expand its livelihood programs outside of its host island, has partnered with Department of Energy (DOE), local government of Caluya, and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), in distributing 16,000 kilos of seaweed propagules to seaweed farmers of barangays Sibato and Sibolo in the municipality of Caluya, Antique. With a total project cost of about P450,000, each of the 80 farmers from the two barangays received 100 kilos of seaweed propagules.

    DA-BFAR retains fishingban in Oriental Mindoro

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has recommended keeping the fishing ban in oil spill-hit municipalities in Oriental Mindoro. The Department of Agriculture (DA-BFAR) has been monitoring the situation in fishing areas affected by the recent oil spill. Fish samples collected and analyzed from select sites in Oriental Mindoro on March 10 showed low-level contaminants or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).

    Iloilo seeks to revive seaweed industry: Prov’l gov’t to hold first-ever seaweed summit

    In Panay Island, the province of Iloilo was a pioneer in seaweed production before it was overtaken by Antique. Due to climate change and the loss of interest among Iloilo’s seaweed farmers, production gradually decreased, according to the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO). To strengthen the local seaweed industry, the provincial government is hosting the first Iloilo Seaweed Summit this April 14 to 15 at the Grand Social Hall of Casa Real de Iloilo, said Dr. Ildefonso Toledo, PAO chief.

    Eight months after typhoon “Odette” washed out their homes and livelihood, seaweed farmers in Dawahon island in Bato, Leyte and slowly getting back on their feet as the propagules that were given to them earlier have expanded their farms, grown matured and harvested them. “There is no poor seaweed farmer, if we persevere to plant more seaweeds,” said Ruel Inoc, a member of the Dawahon Seaweed Farmers Association.

    DA caravan brings technology directly to fishermen

    In a move to bring modern and cost-effective technologies directly to its clientele, the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) has successfully concluded its fisheries technology caravan, covering 10 regions and serving tens of thousands of small fishermen, pond operators and aquaculture entrepreneurs. Agriculture Secretary Leonardo Q. Montemayor said through the DA-BFAR techno-caravan "we are giving flesh to the thrust of President Arroyo to empower our poor countrymen, particularly small and marginal fishermen, by providing them the means to engage in sustainable livelihood projects." The techno-fisheries caravan, bannering the theme, Aquaculture for Rural Development, provides a forum for municipal fishermen, pond operators and aquaculturists to learn and adopt modern and cost-effective technologies, consult their technical problems with fishery experts and air their administrative concerns with DA-BFAR and local government officials.

    La Union board declares calamity state to deal with oil spill

    The provincial board of La Union has declared the province under a state of calamity to enable towns affected by the oil spill supposedly from a sunken vessel or another ship to tap their calamity funds for cleanup operations. La Union Gov. Manuel Ortega said communities, various agencies and nongovernment organizations have been collaborating to remove chunks of hardened oil that have been spotted on La Union beaches. Many believe the oil sludge came from the Myanmar vessel MV Harita Bauxite, which sank off Bolinao town in Pangasinan last week. Others suspect it came from an unidentified cargo vessel, which docked near Bangar town in La Union, on Sunday.

Officials of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) said both seaweed and mud crabs cannot thrive in water temperatures higher than 32 degrees centigrade. “Normal temperature is about 30 degrees centigrade, but right now it has increased to 32. Longer exposure to higher temperature would be damaging (for seaweed),” said Maria Rovilla J. Luhan, SEAFDEC associate scientist and head of the Farming Systems and Ecology Section.
