    Lake Sebu fish kill destroys ₱20M worth of tilapia

    At least 1,000 fish cages containing about 200,000 kilograms of tilapia were ravaged by the latest fish kill in Lake Sebu town, South Cotabato province, last week, an official said on Monday. Lake Sebu Mayor Floro Gandam said at least 250 tilapia growers would get aid from the local government to recover their losses estimated at P20 million.But officials who joined an emergency meeting which Gandam convened on Monday did not think the damage was extensive enough to place the town under a state of calamity. Christopher Ofong, the municipal information officer, said the disaster risk reduction and management office decided against recommending the declaration of state of calamity because some criteria were not met, such as the condition that the fish kill should affect at least 20 percent of the population.

    Guimaras vulnerable to disasters – OCD

    The island province of Guimaras is vulnerable to disasters because it is surrounded by waters, according to Director Jose Roberto Nuñez of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 6. “We have to protect and see to it that ‘yung mga nangyari before ay hindi na mauulit. Ang mga kababayan natin dito sa Guimaras mostly sa shoreline. So kapag may mga incidents, mahihirapan talaga lalo na kung mayroon tayong mga evacuations,” Nuñez said during a cleanup in Guimaras on July 15. One such incident was in August 2006 when Guimaras was devastated by a massive oil spill from the sunken MT Solar 1 spilling 2.1 million liters of bunker fuel in the island. Hundreds of Guimarasnons were displaced economically and their health suffered.

    Regular checking of all Bacolod sea vessels urged

    The Sangguniang Panlungsod here urged the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) to conduct a regular inspection of all sea vessels plying the waters of this city. “The PCG and Marina should ensure that the sea vessels are properly equipped with adequate life-saving and communications instruments during their operations,” said councilor Bartolome Orola. He further said the recent capsizing of three boats in Iloilo Straight served as a lesson to strengthen the city’s maritime safety policies.
