    SC urged to cite DENR in contempt over sand dumping

    The Supreme Court has been asked to cite the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in contempt for allegedly dumping dolomite sand on Manila Bay, a move complainants said was a direct violation of the high court’s continuing mandamus order for state agencies to clean up and rehabilitate the bay. In a 16-page motion, the Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party through its chairman emeritus Etta Rosales sought to intervene in the more than 10 year-old mandamus case pertaining to the rehabilitation of the Manila Bay. The party-list group said dolomite sand is hazardous to health and the environment.

    No toxic chemicals in dolomite sand Manila Bay, test results show

    The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has not found toxic chemicals on the dolomite sand from the Manila Bay beach nourishment project, based on the test results released by its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB). EMB and MGB released on Wednesday evening the test results of the analyses conducted on the dolomite sand samples taken from the beach nourishment project on Sept. 18 to determine if they contain heavy metals that are harmful to health and marine life. Both bureaus conducted testing on the presence of iron, nickel, lead, and mercury

    70 oil spill-affected families return home

    Seventy families from Barangay Mansaya, Lapuz, Iloilo City returned home on Wednesday almost two weeks after an oil spill incident displaced them. Gabino Ramon Mejia, head of plant operations of AC Energy Philippines, said they comprised the first batch of households who could go home following a risk assessment conducted by several stakeholders. AC Energy Philippines owns Power Barge 102 stationed at Bo. Obrero, Lapuz which exploded on July 3, 2020 and caused an oil spill.

    Power barge oil spill: A classy response

    When news broke about an oil spill caused by an explosion in Power Barge 102 moored near Bo. Obrero nearly two weeks ago, some memories of the Guimaras Oil Spill in 2006 flashed into my mind. Still considered the worst oil spill disaster in the country, the Guimaras Oil Spill – caused by the sinking of an oil tanker due to bad weather — spewed about 2 million liters into the sea and the shorelines of Guimaras, Panay, and Negros island. Overall, the Guimaras oil spill affected 20 communities in the 4 municipalities in Guimaras. It also threatened 27 communities in Iloilo province and 17 others in Negros Occidental. But Guimaras was worse-off. The oil that contaminated the waters and the Guimaras shoreline was not only devastating for its environment but also for its people and economy. Guimaras lost billions of pesos and it took years before it can begin to recover.
