    DA-BFAR aids W.Visayas fishery sector amid crisis

    The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Region 6 is taking actions to mitigate the impact of pandemic threat to the livelihood of the fisherfolk and other industry stakeholders. As stated in the DA Memorandum Circular No. 9 series of 2020, all farming and fishing activities shall be allowed to continue despite the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine to prevent further spread of COVID-19. To ensure the unhampered movement of fish cargoes in the region, DA-BFAR Region 6 had issued 43 Food Pass accreditation cards to fish consolidators (traders) from March 19 to 25.

    Gokongwei firm adopts Boracay wetland

    After successfully partnering with private companies, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was able to push for the revival of four wetlands in Boracay Island. Recently, the DENR had sealed their partnership with the JG Summit Petrochemical Corp (JGSPC) with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the rehabilitation of Boracay’s Wetland No. 8 located in Brgy Manoc-manoc. Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, signed the MOA on behalf of the DENR along with the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Director Crisanta Marie Rodriguez, and on behalf of the JGSPC, president and CEO Patrick Henry Go and vice-president Marino Agbayani signed the MOA. This new development highlighted the wetland adoption as a positive step towards biodiversity conservation.

    Closed season' at Visayan Sea starts today

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has declared November 15, 2017, to February 15, 2018, as closed season for sardines, herrings and mackerels fishing, as provided in the Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 167-3. A BFAR media release said that FAO 167-3 prohibits the catching, killing, selling or processing the sexually mature sardines, herrings and mackerels or their larvae, fry or young known locally as “lupoy,” “silinyasi,” “linatsay,” or “manansi.” This covers the portion of the Visayan Sea and adjoining waters enclosed by line drawn through the following points and coastlines: from the mouth of the Danac River on the northeastern tip of the Bantayan Island to Madridejos, through the lighthouse on Gigantes Island, to Clutaya island, to Culasi Point in Capiz province, eastward along the northern coast of Capiz to Bulucaue Point in Varles, Iloilo, southward along the eastern coast of Iloilo to the mouth of Talisay River, westward across the Guimaras Strait to Tomonton Point in Occidental Negros, eastward along the northern Coast of the Island of Negros and back to the mouth of Danao River in Escalante, Negros Occidental.

    LLDA to lose P80 M in fish pen demolition

    The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) expects to lose around P80 million in revenue with the dismantling of illegal fish pens in Laguna de Bay in the next three months. The LLDA is targeting the demolition of illegal fish pens in 3,000 hectares of the lake. Based on the action plan of the LLDA, fish pens with no permits, those blocking navigational lanes, covering excessive areas, delinquent in payment and put up outside the designated areas will be prioritized.
