  • Partial mortality in Porites corals: Variation among Philippine reefs

    Partial mortality or tissue necrosis was quantified in the massive scleractinian coral Porites at three sites in The Philippines (Bolinao, NW Luzon; Puerto Galera, Mindoro; and El Nido, N Palawan). Overall, 15 ± 1 (mean ± 1 standard error, 642 replicates) percent of colony area was dead, mean colony area was 1135 plusmn; 127 cm2, and lesion density was 1.7 ± 0.1 dm—2. Total live coral cover varied between 20 and 63% in belt transects, and Porites and Acropora cover were inversely correlated. ANOVA models incorporating effects of site, colony size, sedimentation rates, wave exposure and depth were highly significant but explained only a small proportion of the variation observed in lesion density and percent dead area (respectively 8 and 2%). Lesion density was found to vary significantly with site (contributed 29% to this explained variance), decrease with increasing colony area (33%), and increase with increasing sedimentation (23%) and wave exposure (14%). Colony size was significantly explained by the factor site (contributing 61% to the total 29% explained variance) and depth (34%), with the smallest colonies being observed in Bolinao and the largest in El Nido. Densities of lesions were highest in Bolinao, intermediate in Puerto Galera, and lowest in El Nido. This pattern is parallel to intensity of human reef exploitation and opposite to that in colony size, live coral cover and Acropora cover. Since only a small part of the observed variance in partial mortality estimators was explained by the ANOVAs, other factors not quantified here must have been more important (e.g. disease incidence, predation, human exploitation).
  • Age, growth, and population structure of Conomurex luhunuas

    Age and growth dynamics of Conomurex luhuanus were investigated to determine the population structure. Age-specific change in shell shape determined with geometric morphometrics revealed discrimination of shape between 0-3 years old at 99–100% while 3–4 years old can be separated with 81% certainty. Using the age discrimination data, K and L∞ were estimated at 1.00 year and 7.28 cm, respectively. Recruitment is bimodal with natural mortality (M) of 0.71 and fishing mortality (F) approximated at 3.92 year. The exploitation rate (E) is 0.85 year, indicating probable overharvesting of the population under study. The presence of a deep-water population, age-specific burying behavior, and bimodal recruitment pattern are possible resilience factors.

    Trends in growth and mortality of three coral species (Anthozoa: Scleractinia), including effects of transplantation

    Three ecologically dominant coral species in a northern Philippine reef were compared in terms of growth and mortality and responses to transplantation. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of using the species concerned in establishing new coral populations through deliberate fragmentation. The species, Acropora hyacinthus, Pocillopora damicornis and Pavona frondifera, displayed distinct differences which could be related to their respective life-history strategies. A. hyacinthus showed tendencies towards an r-mode, with rapid linear growth but also high mortality rates. Response to transplantation was poor. Pocillopora damicornis had intermediate linear growth rates and relatively high mortality. Transplants fared poorly in the initial part of the experiment though they showed successful adaptation after a year. Mortality rates of both A. hyacinthus and P. damicornis were increased by high temperatures during certain times of the year. Pavona frondifera had the highest linear growth rates and no mortality, tending towards a K-mode of life history strategy. It showed the best response to transplantation This species is thus a suitable candidate for large-scale reef restoration.
  • Fisheries Administrative Order No. 245-1. Series of 2013. Regulations and implementing guidelines on group tuna purse seine operations in high seas pocket number 1 as a special management area.

    The Order provides for conservation, management and sustainable producing bigeye, yellowfin, skipjack tuna stocks in the high seas and exclusive economic zones within the framework of International Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean and adapted local resolutions in Philippines. This Administrative Order covers the registered traditional group seine fishing vessels granted access to the HSP1-SMA which is the area of the high seas bounded by the EEZs of the named Federated States in the Order with exact coordination by Vessel Monitoring System. The Order lays down requirements and criteria needed for any person, corporation or entity who intent to engage in group tuna purse seine operations in HSP-1SMA. Section B of the Order provides for procedure in the allocation of fishing access including letter of intent, preliminary list and allocation. The Order further lays down provisions for observe coverage, vessel monitoring system, reporting, vessel listing, monitoring of port landing, catch limit, net mesh size, nature of access right, use of fish aggregating device and penalties. The text consists of 17 Articles.

    Size-dependent predation on juvenile sandfish, Holothuria scabra by seagrass-associated crabs

    High mortality of juvenile Holothuria scabra in seagrass nursery areas has been attributed to predation. In this study, laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the size of two seagrass–associated crabs, Thalamita crenata and Dardanus megistos, on the survival of juvenile sandfish at different sizes (1–10 g). Small juvenile sandfish (1–2 g) offered in field trials were more preferred by small Thalamita and large Dardanus. Non-lethal damage caused by both crabs were also evident, indicating differences in the mode of attack and consumption. The incidence of non-lethal wounds in medium and large juveniles in the laboratory indicate higher incidences of unsuccessful attacks by the crabs. Differences in consumption rate may be related to cheliped morphology and handling techniques, and activity patterns affecting encounter rates. Mortality rates of juvenile sandfish due to T. crenata (CW: 4.30–7.05 cm) ranged from 10–43%, while those by D. megistos (SL: 0.90–2.3 cm) was even higher at 34–53% after 24 h trials. This is the first report that a hermit crab D. megistos is a significant predator of juvenile sandfish. Results provide new insights on crab–soft-bodied prey interactions in tropical seagrass areas. These are also important considerations in stock restoration and ocean-based culture. Given that juveniles (≤10 g) are very vulnerable to predation by these common crab species, growing sandfish to larger sizes is essential prior to release in the field.
