    Low 'bangus' price alarms Pangasinan fish growers

    Reeling from the continuous tumbling prices of farmed “bangus,” fish cage operators in Pangasinan sought the intervention of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and other concerned agencies to prevent the province’s multimillion-peso aquaculture industry from crashing. During a dialogue between bangus industry stakeholders and government agencies on June 21 at the National Fisheries Development Center here, growers of bangus (milkfish) said prices started to drop last February and is now at P90 to P110 per kilo. Last May, bangus, considered the country’s national fish, was still being sold in Pangasinan markets from P120 to P200 a kilo.

    SEAFDEC turns up the heat to meet bangus fry shortage

    Despite being widely regarded as the unofficial national fish, about half of the milkfish on Filipino tables are born in hatcheries in Indonesia and Taiwan. This is the result of a perennial shortage of fry, the baby bangus in the Philippines, that are seeded into fishponds, netcages and pens where they continue to grow to marketable sizes. Recently, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD), an international research institution in Tigbauan, Iloilo, alongside the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA- BFAR), has been finding ways to lift the Philippines into bangus fry sufficiency.

    RP's first mariculture park to rise in Guimaras

    The country's first mariculture park has been established in Igang Bay, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. The park was jointly set up by the government-hosted Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the provincial government of Guimaras. The facility will be launched on July 5 as one of the main activities during the celebration of SEAFDEC AQD's 28th anniversary.

    RP aquaculture sector benefits from BFAR-SEAFDEC program

    The country's aquaculture sector continues to benefit considerably from a program jointly being implemented by a government agency and a Southeast Asian center. Called Joint Mission for Accelerated Nationwide Technology Transfer Program (JMANTTP), the undertaking was launched in January 1999 by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the government-hosted Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) based in Tigbauan, Iloilo. The program was convinced to make available technologies developed at SEAFDEC AQD to its host country, the Philippines.

    Fish output slightly down to 972,910 MT in Q3 – PSA

    The country's fish production slightly decreased in the third quarter of the year as output from commercial and municipal fisheries declined, the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) said. In its latest Fisheries Situation Report, the agency said total fish output stood at 972, 910 metric tons (MT)in the July-September period, just 0.4 percent lower from a year-ago level. Fish yielded by commercial fisheries dropped by 1.60 percent to 232, 810 MT from 236, 590 MT incurred in the same period last year.

    Milkfish fry sufficiency program in full swing

    Due to the declining supply of wild-caught fry and insufficiency of hatchery-bred fry from local hatcheries, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s (SEAFDEC) Aquaculture Department (AQD) acquired additional 78 milkfish broodstocks to support the government “Bangus Fry Sufficiency Program.” The recent acquisition of the milkfish broodstock will augment the more than 300 being maintained in Tigbauan main station and Igang Marine Station. To date, the AQD has produced and dispersed 16 million hatchery-bred excluding the 380,000 fry produced in newly-built hatchery in Sagnay, Camarines Sur.

    BFAR-6 to spend P10M for fingerling dispersal project

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will spend around P10 million for its free fingerling dispersal project in Western Visayas this year. In an interview Tuesday, BFAR-6 director Remia A. Apari said the fingerling dispersal is their contribution to achieve the mandate of the Department of Agriculture (DA) to provide affordable and available food on the table of every Filipino. Tilapia fingerlings will be released to coastal and upland areas and are expected to benefit some 100 fisher folks. Initially, “hito” or catfish juveniles will be provided to some 60 to 60 fisherfolk. The fingerlings will come with the corresponding feeds requirement, which will also be provided free, she said.
