- Regular checking of all Bacolod sea vessels urgedSinguay, Mae (Panay News, Inc., 2019-08-13)The Sangguniang Panlungsod here urged the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) to conduct a regular inspection of all sea vessels plying the waters of this city. “The PCG and Marina should ensure that the sea vessels are properly equipped with adequate life-saving and communications instruments during their operations,” said councilor Bartolome Orola. He further said the recent capsizing of three boats in Iloilo Straight served as a lesson to strengthen the city’s maritime safety policies.
- Coastguard(Panay News, Inc., 2019-08-06)Every time there is a sea disaster, we focus our attention to the coastguard. Are the expectations for it to do well equal to the powers it is vested with? The Philippine Coast Guard must enforce laws, promulgate and administer rules and regulations for the promotion and safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment and resources. It must render aid to persons and vessels in distress and conduct search and rescued in case of marine accident within the maritime jurisdiction of the country. It must enforce and assist in the implementation of laws on fishery, immigration, tariff and customs, forestry, firearms and explosives, dangerous drugs, trafficking of women and children. It must enforce and assist in the maintenance of maritime law enforcement and security based on the applicable laws.
- PH seas running out of fish, says BFAR execSotelo, Yolanda (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2015-11-07)More than a hundred fishermen, mostly from Pangasinan province, were out in the West Philippine Sea when Typhoon “Lando” (international name: Koppu) lashed Central and northern Luzon late last month. The sea was calm when the fishermen sailed. But the typhoon unleashed violent winds that wrecked their motorized fishing boats. The fishermen drifted for days in the open sea until they were rescued. The risks taken by fishermen were an indication of how Philippine seas are running out of fish, said Asis Perez, director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), during the national summit on participatory governance toward sustainable fisheries held last week in Pasay City.
- No leak from stranded cargo ship in Antique(Panay News, Inc., 2018-09-06)The cargo ship that ran aground off the coast of Barangay 4 has no leakage, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). M/V Star Liberty has been stuck some 300 meters from the shoreline of San Jose since Monday after strong wind and waves due to the southwest monsoon brought it there. PCG-Antique station commander Perlita Cinco said they have not seen fuel floating on seawaters as of Tuesday.

(Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2013-03-02)The ongoing salvage operations for the United States Navy warship USS Guardian, which remains grounded at the Tubbataha Reef, will not prevent diving enthusiasts from exploring the underwater beauty of the diving site. Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Palawan District commander Commodore Enrico Efren Evangelista said divers would still be allowed by the Tubbataha Management Office (TMO) to explore parts of the coral reef not affected by the grounding incident. The USS Guardian ran aground in Tubbataha Reef and damaged about 4,000 square meters of the atoll.
- P.6 M sought for Albay coral reef damageDematera, Cet (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2018-08-15)The city government here has asked the owner of a cargo vessel that ran aground and destroyed around 200 square meters of coral reef in Albay Gulf to pay P665,000 in damages. Mayor Noel Rosal said the captain of MV Jerly Lily gave assurance yesterday that they would pay the amount. Rosal said the cargo vessel was loaded with copra when it ran aground in Pasig Reef off Barangay Arimbay.
