- SMPC launches mangrove planting(Concept & Information Group, Inc., 2023-04-22)Consunji-led integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation and the Department of Energy have forged a partnership to help clean up and contain the oil spill from a sunken tanker in Oriental Mindoro. Semirara and DoE collaborated with the Philippine Coast Guard, Office of Civil Defense, Department of Health, local government units, and the impacted residents in Semirara Island. The hazardous waste first reached the shores of Semirara Island in Caluya, Antique on the afternoon of 3 March.
- Coast Guard sues firm for negligence over oil spill in IloiloBurgos, Nestor P. Jr. (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2020-07-13)The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has filed a criminal complaint against the operator of a damaged power barge that spilled thousands of liters of bunker fuel into the waters of Iloilo and Guimaras Island. In a complaint filed at the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office on Friday, the PCG accused AC Energy Philippines and its officials of violating Republic Act No. 8550 (Fisheries Code) for negligence that led to the oil spill which contaminated 88.8 hectares of mangroves and 27 coastal villages in Iloilo City, Dumangas town in Iloilo province and Guimaras Island. “Let this incident be a reminder to all industry stakeholders that even the slightest negligence can pose direct or indirect threat on the health and safety of the people, as well as living and nonliving aquatic resources,” Vice Adm. George Ursabia Jr., PCG commandant, said in the statement.
- Mangrove park outside of planned Bulacan airportOrejas, Tonette (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc., 2019-08-24)A mangrove park that was rehabilitated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in a town in Bulacan province is far from the proposed 2,500-hectare New Manila International Airport project of San Miguel Holdings Corp. (SMHC). Bulakan town’s Mangrove Ecopark is 277 meters away from the proposed SMHC aerotropolis and will not be affected by its construction, according to a certification issued on July 22 by Emelita Lingat, Bulacan provincial environment and natural resources officer. Bulakan residents have been concerned about the ecopark at Sitio Wawang Capiz in Barangay Taliptip, which is north of the planned P734-billion international gateway.
