  • Transcriptome analysis of growth variation in early juvenile stage sandfish Holothuria scabra

    The sandfish Holothuria scabra is a high-value tropical sea cucumber species representing a major mariculture prospect across the Indo-Pacific. Advancements in culture technology, rearing, and processing present options for augmenting capture production, stock restoration, and sustainable livelihood activities from hatchery-produced sandfish. Further improvements in mariculture production may be gained from the application of genomic technologies to improve performance traits such as growth. In this study, we performed de novo transcriptome assembly and characterization of fast- and slow-growing juvenile H. scabra from three Philippine populations. Analyses revealed 66 unigenes that were consistently differentially regulated in fast-growing sandfish and found to be associated with immune response and metabolism. Further, we identified microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphism markers potentially associated with fast growth. These findings provide insight on potential genomic determinants underlying growth regulation in early juvenile sandfish which will be useful for further functional studies.

  • Passive greenhouse heating, recirculation, and nutrient addition for nursery phase Tridacna gigas: Growth boost during winter months

    The impetus for this study was winter-related mortality of juvenile Tridacna gigas along Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Heating nursery tank water by passive solar heating in a greenhouse and the addition of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) was assessed for effect on the growth and survival of cultured juvenile clams. Two age classes of T. gigas were used, with means of 1.2 cm and 17.0 cm shell length. Treatments consisted of nutrient-spikes of 20 μ M and 40 μ M ammonium chloride daily or on alternate days, plus s spike of 2.3 μ M phosphate once per week vs. controls without nutrient addition. Three rearing systems were used: (1) recirculating water enclosed in a greenhouse; (2) flow-through water enclosed in a greenhouse; (3) flow-through water with ambient conditions. In the older clams growth in weight was best in system 2, while growth in shell length (SL) was best in system 1, and DIN treatments significantly increased growth compared with controls. In the younger clams, growth in SL was best in system 1. DIN treatments produced significantly greater growth than controls, but there was no difference between 20-μ M and 40-μ M treatments. Survival was 100% for larger clams but for smaller clams mean survival was highest overall in system 1, while 20-μ M DIN treatments within systems produced the best overall survival. The highest levels of DIN in the nursery tanks were found in the 40-μ M DIN treatments, particularly in system 1. The wet tissue weight/shell length ratio for 40-μ M DIN treatments was highest in system 1 and decreased in systems 2 and 3, while controls were similar. Dry shell weight/shell length was highest in the 40-μ M DIN treatment over the control in system 1 only. The zooxanthellae index (no. of algal cells/g clam) was significantly higher in the 40-μ M DIN treatment than in the control in all three systems. Biochemical analysis of whole animals showed higher carbohydrate content in system 2 and in treatments receiving 20 μ M DIN. Tissue protein content did not differ significantly between systems but increased with increasing nutrient concentration. Lipid content was highest in system 1 and decreased with increasing nutrient concentration. Tissue water content of clams at the 20-μ M DIN level was lower than clams in other treatments, indicating superior condition. The combination of passive solar heating, recirculated water, and nutrient addition for the giant clam land nursery phase opens possibilities for culture of this tropical bivalve in subtropical zones or in the tropics distant from the ocean.
  • BFAR to public: Don't touch beached juvenile sharks

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Central Visayas has issued a warning about juvenile sharks recently found washed up on the shores of Santander, the southernmost town of Cebu. BFAR also advised the public to avoid these sharks to ensure the safety of both people and animals. The bureau also warned the public from illegally capturing these baby sharks for the illegal trade of shark fin, which is used as an ingredient in some exotic cuisine.
  • Crabifier app to help identify mangrove crab

    Crabifier, a mobile app that identifies mangrove crab species at the juvenile stage, was recently launched. This mobile application was developed by the Technologies for Biodiversity Use and Conservation (TechBiodive) Unit of the De La Salle University (DLSU). It is an output of the mangrove crab project, “Integrating Genomics with Image Analysis and Geographic Information System Technology for Improved Rearing of Mudcrabs,” funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD). Headed by Dr. Ma. Carmen Ablan-Lagman and Dr. Chona Camille Vince Cruz-Abeledo of DLSU, the team that developed the app includes Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center experts Dr. Ma. Rowena Eguia, Ann Francesca Laguna and Courtney Anne Ngo. The launch, which was held at the Multipurpose Hall, Bro. Andrew Gonzales, FCS, Hall, DLSU in July also launched another app, Biodiversity and Threats Monitoring App, BioMon.
  • Experts urging gov't to craft framework to protect sardines

    Experts are urging the government to craft a national management framework to address overfishing sardines in the country, citing declining stocks due to heavy fishing pressure and environmental changes. "Sardines are being overfished and existing policy measures are enough to protect them, especially spawning fish. To keep up with being caught too quickly, they biologically adapt by maturing early to compensate for their population loss. They remain small, and spawn less compared to ideal, mature sardines," a scientist from University of the Philippines Visayas.
  • Gov't crafts masterplan for eel industry development

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) is investing around P20 million to develop the local eel industry, with a focus on the sustainable utilization and conservation of resources. The DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is formulating a master plan for the nationwide development of the industry and implementation of sub-activities that will start next year. “The plan is focused on the development of studies on the culture of eel, nursery grow-out, feed formulation and farming systems, and sustainable resource utilization,” said Evelyn Ame, DA-BFAR national eel focal person.
  • New hatchery for sea cucumber at SEAFDEC

    At the price of $180 to 250 per kilogram (Php 12,000 per kg) of dried sea cucumber in the United States, sea cucumber are good bets for fish farmers wanting to find the new gold in aquaculture. This has driven South East Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) Aquaculture Department, the research centre based in Iloilo, to develop the hatchery, nursery and grow-out technologies of the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra so that overexploitation of the wild fisheries on which the sea cucumber trade depends will cease or be minimized. Aquaculture can take the pressure off wild stock, enabling it to recover and allowing sustainable management plans to be put in place by local government units and people’s organizations in sea cucumber-rich areas.
