    No fish shortage: Western Visayas 125% fish sufficient - BFAR

    The campaign against illegal fishing is paying off. Western Visayas is “more than 100 percent sufficient” in fish, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). The region’s fish sufficiency is at 125 percent, Regional Director Remia Aparri told Panay News. She cited local government units (LGUs), partner government agencies, fisherfolk and other stakeholders for supporting BFAR’s campaign against illegal fishing and the annual three-month closed season observed in the Visayan Sea (November to February) to give fishes time to spawn, repopulate and grow.

    P1.4-M illegal fish seized in major anti-poaching ops

    In a significant move against illegal fishing, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) successfully conducted a week-long operation, culminating on Monday, Nov. 13. Illegally-caught fish valued at nearly P1.4 million were recovered. A big portion of the seizure, worth over P1.1 million, was from the coastal town of Concepcion were there’s a high incidence of illegal fishing.

    BFAR, partners ink pact on marine conservation

    Regional Director Remia Aparri of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with two local government units and other enforcement agencies to strengthen the protection of marine environment and resources in Western Visayas. In the opening of the 54th Fish Conservation Week Celebration in Tanza, Iloilo City on Oct 15, 2017, Aparri cited the importance of preserving, conserving and protecting the coastal and marine resources as the main source of livelihood of the coastal communities. The MOU with Mayor Siegfredo Betita of Carles and a representative of Mayor Milliard Villanueva of Concepcion, Iloilo seeks to create a joint task force that will address the rampant and unabated illegal, unreported fishing activities within the municipal waters.

    BFAR cites outstanding partners

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6) recognized its outstanding partners in local governments, law enforcers, and the media for helping achieve a sustainable fishery sector. The awardees are the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police Regional Maritime, Iloilo Police Provincial Office, Department of Agriculture, the municipalities of Caluya in Antique, Pan-ay in Capiz, EB Magalona in Negros Occidental, San Joaquin in Iloilo, and Nueva Valencia in Guimaras, Philippine Information Agency, The Daily Guardian, Radyo ng Bayan, ABS-CBN, and GMA. Remia Aparri, BFAR-6 regional director, said the awardees were recognized based on their support for the bureau’s projects, particularly in the campaign against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUUF).
