- P1.4-M illegal fish seized in major anti-poaching opsBaylon, Jen (Panay News, Inc., 2023-11-16)In a significant move against illegal fishing, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) successfully conducted a week-long operation, culminating on Monday, Nov. 13. Illegally-caught fish valued at nearly P1.4 million were recovered. A big portion of the seizure, worth over P1.1 million, was from the coastal town of Concepcion were there’s a high incidence of illegal fishing.

The goal was to make the courts more appreciative of the anti- illegal fishing campaign of the government and thus, hopefully, make decisions favorable to the preservation of our marine resources.

Hosted by the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department (AQD), the PCM meeting brings together delegates from SEAFDEC’s 11 member-countries Brunel Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Also in attendance are senior officials and staff from SEAFDEC’s five departments that include researchers, scientists, and experts.
- 86 illegal fishers caught in N. IloiloNepomoceno, Jezza (Panay News, Inc., 2018-09-06)A total of 86 fishermen were apprehended for illegal fishing in the waters of the northern towns of Concepcion and Carles early this month. They were using active gears such as trawl, ring net and modified bag net locally known as baskal and without permits from the municipal governments concerned. (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2017-10-17)Regional Director Remia Aparri of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with two local government units and other enforcement agencies to strengthen the protection of marine environment and resources in Western Visayas. In the opening of the 54th Fish Conservation Week Celebration in Tanza, Iloilo City on Oct 15, 2017, Aparri cited the importance of preserving, conserving and protecting the coastal and marine resources as the main source of livelihood of the coastal communities. The MOU with Mayor Siegfredo Betita of Carles and a representative of Mayor Milliard Villanueva of Concepcion, Iloilo seeks to create a joint task force that will address the rampant and unabated illegal, unreported fishing activities within the municipal waters.
- US-BFAR partner to improve fish production in the VisayasMabasa, Roy C. (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2018-11-21)The United States government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have jointly launched “Fish Right,” a P1.3 billion five-year sustainable fisheries project aimed to increase fish biomass and strengthen management of marine areas in some parts of the Visayas region. According to the US Embassy in Manila, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project will focus on addressing biodiversity threats, improving marine ecosystem governance, and increasing the number and weight of fish in the Calamianes Island Group, Visayan Seas, and South Negros. The partnership between the US government and BFAR, an agency under Department of Agriculture (DA) is expected to benefit two million people who depend onmarine resources for food and income, the Embassy said.

Iloilo has the highest registration with 443,011; Negros Occidental is second with 39,526; Antique, 21,648; Capiz, 1, 689; Guimaras,11, 056; and Aklan, 8,815. Region 2 came in second among 18 regions with the highest recorded registration, next only to Region 8 which has 151,410 fisherfolks.

- UI law students to help protect Visayan Sea(Panay News, Inc., 2018-03-15)Students of the University of Iloilo's (UI) College of Law volunteered to help preserve the Visayan Sea. The college’s In Solidum Student Council presented to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. a manifesto offering support and help to the provincial government that has made it a priority to combat illegal fishing most especially in the waters of northern Iloilo. These waters are part of the Visayan Sea.
