- 2 boats nabbed for illegal fishingSornito, Ime (Panay News, Inc., 2023-10-25)Authorities have recently apprehended two fishing boats engaged in illegal fishing in the waters of Barangay Sibay in the municipality of Caluya. The fishing boat’s personnel were unregistered and were using active fishing gear, in violation of Republic Act 8550, or the Fisheries Code of the Philippines, which is further amended by Republic Act 10654.

(Philippine Business Daily Mirror Publishing, Inc., 2021-10-08)Sardine fishers in Dinagat Islands lamented their declining catch due to overfishing and harmful fishing practices of encroaching commercial fishers, who, they pointed out, are barred from municipal waters by law. Fisherfolk farmers revealed their sardine catch situation during a recent policy dialogue between their group and concerned government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). “[We had plenty of catches] before. But now, not anymore because we see fishing boats using superlight even closer to the shore. This drives us, small fisherfolk, farther into the deeper part of the ocean. Meanwhile, the commercial fishers using superlight are able to catch fish inside our municipal waters,” Eric Sarcauga, a sardine fisher from Dinagat Islands, was quoted as saying in a statement issued by nongovernment organization Oceana, the organizer of the virtual dialogue.
- Campaign against illegal fishing earns citation for villarRamos-Araneta, Macon (Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2018-12-24)Senator Cynthia Villar was recognized by the Department of Agriculture for her role in the enactment of the law against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. During the first command conference of the Philippines committee against IUUF at the Philippines international convention center last Monday, Villar was the recognized " for her pivotal role in enactment or republic act 10654, which is the country's legal backbone in the fight against IUUF". Villar as chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Food principally sponsored the bill which also resulted in the lifting of the yellow tag on Philippine fish imports. If not immediately addressed, the yellow tag would have caused a ban on the Philippines to export fish products to Europe, one of the country’s largest markets.
- US-BFAR partner to improve fish production in the VisayasMabasa, Roy C. (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2018-11-21)The United States government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have jointly launched “Fish Right,” a P1.3 billion five-year sustainable fisheries project aimed to increase fish biomass and strengthen management of marine areas in some parts of the Visayas region. According to the US Embassy in Manila, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project will focus on addressing biodiversity threats, improving marine ecosystem governance, and increasing the number and weight of fish in the Calamianes Island Group, Visayan Seas, and South Negros. The partnership between the US government and BFAR, an agency under Department of Agriculture (DA) is expected to benefit two million people who depend onmarine resources for food and income, the Embassy said.

Alcala said the DA, through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), has been instituting measures to ensure that fishing in the country’s waters becomes sustainable and that all forms of fishery resource use provide equitable benefits to stakeholders.
- BFAR-6 to spend P10M for fingerling dispersal project(Panay News, Inc., 2017-01-05)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will spend around P10 million for its free fingerling dispersal project in Western Visayas this year. In an interview Tuesday, BFAR-6 director Remia A. Apari said the fingerling dispersal is their contribution to achieve the mandate of the Department of Agriculture (DA) to provide affordable and available food on the table of every Filipino. Tilapia fingerlings will be released to coastal and upland areas and are expected to benefit some 100 fisher folks. Initially, “hito” or catfish juveniles will be provided to some 60 to 60 fisherfolk. The fingerlings will come with the corresponding feeds requirement, which will also be provided free, she said.
- BFAR cites outstanding partnersConserva, Louine Hope (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2016-10-24)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6) recognized its outstanding partners in local governments, law enforcers, and the media for helping achieve a sustainable fishery sector. The awardees are the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police Regional Maritime, Iloilo Police Provincial Office, Department of Agriculture, the municipalities of Caluya in Antique, Pan-ay in Capiz, EB Magalona in Negros Occidental, San Joaquin in Iloilo, and Nueva Valencia in Guimaras, Philippine Information Agency, The Daily Guardian, Radyo ng Bayan, ABS-CBN, and GMA. Remia Aparri, BFAR-6 regional director, said the awardees were recognized based on their support for the bureau’s projects, particularly in the campaign against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUUF).
