When I was a newly minted married woman, my husband and I started our family in a condominium and every day, I got to see Manila Bay… and it was lovely. I could watch the waters shimmer under the sun as boats passed by and witness the beautiful sunset on the horizon. Having seen the sun’s descent to end each day in full glory, I could agree with my elders when, growing up, they would tell me there was nothing more beautiful than the sun setting on Manila Bay.
- Proposed Sual fish port inspectedReyes, Jonas (Concept & Information Group, Inc., 2021-06-23)The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) recently conducted a site visit in this town for the planned construction of an improved PFDA-Sual Fish Port (PFDA-SFP). PFDA General Manager Atty. Glen A. Pangapalan revealed that it is one of the agency’s ongoing flagship projects and is under the national government’s “Build, Build, Build” program. Pangapalan led the site visit along with Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Agri-Industrialization and for Fisheries Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero.
- Record fish unloading in major portsMiraflor, Madelaine B. (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2021-03-26)The implementation of stricter two-week quarantine measures in the Greater Manila Area has not affected supply of fish with the Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) reported of record high weekly fish unloading from March 16 to 23 period. The National Capital Region and nearby provinces are still under the general community quarantine (GCQ) status, but the government has reimposed stricter quarantine protocols from March 22 up to April 4 on due to surging COVID-19 cases in these areas. PFDA recorded the unloading of 5,533.76 metric tons (MT) of fish supply for consumers in the National Capital Region (NCR) and several areas in Central and South Luzon.
- BFAR 7 urges LGUs to help fishermen, traders affected by Covid-19 pandemic(Sun • Star Publishing, 2020-04-01)Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7 Director Allan Poquita urged local chief executives on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, to support fishermen and fish traders whose livelihood were affected by the economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. Poquita said Covid-19 has been crippling the fishing industry as local governments imposed travel and movement restrictions to prevent the spread of the deadly disease. “Fewer people are allowed to go out from their homes to buy basic necessities and commodities. Some traders could hardly pass through borders because of the enhanced community quarantine. We fully support the measures imposed by the local government units but we are also asking their help to address the plight of our fishery stakeholders,” he said.
- San Jose gets new fish port(Panay News, Inc., 2017-10-06)The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) turned over the P40-million facility to the local government on Wednesday. The new fishing port will serve not only San Jose de Buenavista but also the neighboring towns, said Iloilo Fish Port Complex officer-in-charge Custodio Balaowing. It will enhance the livelihood of the fisherfolk, bring business to the commercial fishing boat operators and improve the local fishing industry, he said. “Expect more business for the next days.”
- P16.9M in livelihood projects for fisherfolksSantiagudo, Emme Rose (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2018-08-23)Iloilo City needs P16.9 million for the proposed project “Enhancement of Fisherfolk Capacity and Livelihood Development for Community Resiliency” for the fisherfolk sector of the community. According to City Agriculturist Romulo Pangantihon, Mayor Jose Espinosa III instructed him to make a proposal on how to uplift the lives of the fisherfolk community, which is considered as the “poorest of the poor sector.” “It is part of the mayor’s Pag-ulikid Program. We already forwarded the proposal to Michael Dino, presidential assistant for the Visayas,” he said.
- New community fish landing centers in AklanZabal, Boy Ryan (Panay News, Inc., 2018-06-25)Two community fish landing centers (CFLCs) were turned over in the towns of Tangalan and Numancia in Aklan. The CFLCs are under the Targeted Action to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation program of the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). The program is aimed at helping fishing communities by helping to increase their income.
- Half of Agri department's fish landing, cold storage projects due after 2016Conserva, Louine Hope (BusinessWorld Publishing Corporation, 2015-10-16)More small fish landing centers and cold storage facilities are being planned by the Department of Agriculture (DA) after the 252 lined up this year until 2016. Asis G. Perez, director of the DA’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources ( BFAR), said the agency has a target of 500 of these post-harvest structures nationwide. “Connectivity or enabling the fishers to directly deal with the market is our priority. We have funds for these projects. The 252 landings are funded by the 2015 and 2016 budget,” said Mr. Perez during a news conference at last week’s Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum on Food Security and the Blue Economy.
- BFAR completes 15 fish landing centers in WVDe Los Santos, Maricyn A. (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2017-08-16)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6) completed 15 community fish landing centers (CLFC) in Western Visayas to boost marketing of fish catch in the region. Joel Abalayan of BFAR-6 Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Office said the establishment of CLFC is a targeted intervention to spur inclusive growth in the coastal areas with high poverty incidence and large population of registered fisherfolk. “The CFLCs will serve as hubs for economic activities, as community center for fish trade and venue for skills training,” Abalayan said.

With modernization steps to gain momentum for sustainable and inclusive growth, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala is positive that efforts of the government will enable the sector to continue providing a stable supply of food, livelihood, and ecological services. Alcala said the DA, through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), has been instituting measures to ensure that fishing in the country’s waters becomes sustainable and that all forms of fishery resource use provide equitable benefits to stakeholders.
