- Fisheries Administrative Order No. 270: Series of 2023. Rules and regulations on the operations of the Philippine flagged fishing vessels operating in distant waters (beyond national jurisdiction).(Department of Agriculture, 2023-01-27)This Administrative Order provides for the conditions on the registry of the fishing vessels further to Republic Act No. 8550 and the requirements for the implementation of flag state responsibilities to not engaging vessels in IUU fishing. The Order requires update of fishing vessel listing that are operating in the High Seas area by BFAR and compliance with the vessel marking and specification requirements of the RFMO. This Order applies to all Philippine- flagged fishing vessels engaged in distant water fishing regardless of type. The text consists of 27 Articles divided into 5 Chapters as follow: General Provisions (I); Measures for High Seas (II); Measures for Vessels Operating in Waters of Other Coastal States (III); Prohibited Acts and Penalties (IV); Miscellaneous Provisions (V). The text has one Appendix on list of acronyms.
- Protect us from Chinese ships, fishers ask Navy, PCG(Philippine Manila Standard Publishing, Inc., 2023-10-02)Fishermen appealed to the government on Sunday to increase coast guard and naval patrols to protect them from the Chinese Coast Guard, which has stepped up their efforts in recent months to keep them from entering the Scarborough (Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag) Shoal lagoon, where fishes are abundant. In an interview on radio dzBB, the spokesman of the Bigkis ng Mangingisda Federation in Masinloc, Zambales said Chinese vessels and rubber boats continue to block Filipino fishermen from entering the lagoon. “Chinese fishing vessels are also outside, but they can fish more freely in our reef. When Filipino fishermen insist on entering, they are being blocked and chased by Chinese Coast Guard rubber boats,” said Henrelito Empoc, the group’s spokesperson, speaking in Filipino.
- Closed fishing season for sardines, mackerel, herring begins Nov. 15Cotejo, Honey (Sun • Star Publishing, 2022-11-16)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Central Visayas (BFAR-7) has banned fishing for sardines, herring, and mackerel within the Visayan Sea for three months starting November 15, 2022. Allan Poquita, BFAR 7 director, told SunStar Cebu Tuesday, November 15, 2022, that the temporary ban which has been practiced annually for several years already is meant to ensure the protection and conservation of the said species in the Visayan Sea. The closed fishing season affecting around 22 coastal areas along the Visayan Sea is based on Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 167-3 issued in 2013.
- Senate probe sought on cyanide fishing in Panatag ShoalFelipe, Cecille; Macairan, Evelyn (Philippine Star Printing Co., Inc., 2024-02-26)Sen. Francis Tolentino is seeking a Senate investigation into the alleged cyanide fishing carried out in parts of the ocean within Philippine territory, particularly near Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, which he branded as “environmental terrorism.” Tolentino said the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species could be used as bases in the filing of complaints against those involved in cyanide fishing.

In an exclusive interview with SunStar Cebu, Johann Tejada, spokesperson for BFAR 7, assured on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, that the sardine beaching event will not impact the region’s vibrant underwater sardine population or its standing as a top diving destination.

The amount will be spent on fishing equipment such as bancas, payao, lambaklad, fishing gears or paraphernalia, seaweeds propagation gears and post-harvest equipment, BFAR head of Information and Fisherfolk Coordination Unit and spokesperson Nazario Briguera said at the weekly Laging Handa press briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday. Fuel subsidy for municipal and commercial fishing boats will also be provided.
- Boodle fight held in Rosario, Cavite to promote seafood industry after oil spillDena, Carla (Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, 2024-09-10)The local government unit (LGU) of Rosario held a fish port boodle fight on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to show to the public that locally caught fish and seafood are now safe to eat. Rosario Public Information Officer Sid Samaniego told the Manila Bulletin that the local fish trade bore the brunt of the recent shellfish ban imposed by the provincial government on Aug. 1 due to the Bataan oil spill. The shellfish ban was lifted on Aug. 29 after the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) declared shellfish from Cavite safe to consume.
- DA-BFAR retains fishingban in Oriental MindoroSausa, Radee (Concept & Information Group, Inc., 2023-04-13)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has recommended keeping the fishing ban in oil spill-hit municipalities in Oriental Mindoro. The Department of Agriculture (DA-BFAR) has been monitoring the situation in fishing areas affected by the recent oil spill. Fish samples collected and analyzed from select sites in Oriental Mindoro on March 10 showed low-level contaminants or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).
