    Western Visayas has a total of 143,267 municipal fisherfolks as of the second week of October 2015. Iloilo has the highest registration with 443,011; Negros Occidental is second with 39,526; Antique, 21,648; Capiz, 1, 689; Guimaras,11, 056; and Aklan, 8,815. Region 2 came in second among 18 regions with the highest recorded registration, next only to Region 8 which has 151,410 fisherfolks.

    Modern technology could be an effective measure to regulate illegal fishing at the Visayan Sea. The strategy includes the establishment of 120 radar stations all over the country by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for efficient and effective monitoring of fishing activities. Rojas said the mayors also expressed support in the declaration of the 10,000 square kilometer portion of the Visayan Sea as a “fishery management area.”

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6) recognized its outstanding partners in local governments, law enforcers, and the media for helping achieve a sustainable fishery sector. The awardees are the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police Regional Maritime, Iloilo Police Provincial Office, Department of Agriculture, the municipalities of Caluya in Antique, Pan-ay in Capiz, EB Magalona in Negros Occidental, San Joaquin in Iloilo, and Nueva Valencia in Guimaras, Philippine Information Agency, The Daily Guardian, Radyo ng Bayan, ABS-CBN, and GMA. Remia Aparri, BFAR-6 regional director, said the awardees were recognized based on their support for the bureau’s projects, particularly in the campaign against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUUF).
