- BFAR urged to lead fight vs HB 7853Gomez, Eireene Jairee (The Manila Times Publishing Corporation, 2021-04-30)Environmental group Oceana, along with more than 1,100 fisherfolk groups across the country, urged Department of Agriculture (DA) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to lead the opposition to House Bill 7853 that will allow commercial fishing operations in the country’s municipal waters. “We need to uphold the law and complete the implementation of reforms under the amended Fisheries Code,” the groups said in a joint statement that was sent to the author of the bill, Cebu Third District Rep. Pablo John Garcia, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries. “Instead of supporting the artisanal fisherfolk improve their capacity and efficiency in their fishing efforts that will improve their livelihood and rise above from hunger and malnutrition, they will open up the municipal water to commercial fishing operations. All the efforts to increase production in fisheries while improving the life and livelihood of municipal fisherfolk will lead to nothing,” they further said.
- WV registers 143,267 fishersConserva, Louine Hope (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2015-11-29)Western Visayas has a total of 143,267 municipal fisherfolks as of the second week of October 2015. Iloilo has the highest registration with 443,011; Negros Occidental is second with 39,526; Antique, 21,648; Capiz, 1, 689; Guimaras,11, 056; and Aklan, 8,815. Region 2 came in second among 18 regions with the highest recorded registration, next only to Region 8 which has 151,410 fisherfolks.
- BFAR completes 15 fish landing centers in WVDe Los Santos, Maricyn A. (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2017-08-16)The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6) completed 15 community fish landing centers (CLFC) in Western Visayas to boost marketing of fish catch in the region. Joel Abalayan of BFAR-6 Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Office said the establishment of CLFC is a targeted intervention to spur inclusive growth in the coastal areas with high poverty incidence and large population of registered fisherfolk. “The CFLCs will serve as hubs for economic activities, as community center for fish trade and venue for skills training,” Abalayan said.
- 7 LGUs to get P1-M fishery projectsMacahilo, Max N. (Daily Guardian Multi-Media Services, Inc., 2015-01-29)Seven towns and cities in Region 6 are entitled to receive P1 million worth of projects from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for registering the highest number of municipal fisherfolk. The seven LGUs from Negros Occidental, Guimaras and Iloilo are included in the 100 cities and towns which topped the Municipal Fisherfolk Registration or FishR. Fish-R is BFAR’s year-long program designed to enhance, fast track and complete the Municipal Fisherfolk Registry of coastal Local Government Units (LGUs) nationwide in accordance to RA 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code.

The X-ray showed fractures of the nasal bone. The other crew sustained lacerated wounds in the right hand when he parried the stabs of a bladed instrument which required seven stitches. He was discharged earlier,” Banias said. The incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when the task force spotted a modified zipper or Super Hulbot in the waters of Baliguian Island, the farthest island in Concepcion, Iloilo.
