    Iloilo fisherfolk, coastal LGUs oppose commercial fishing in municipal waters

    The provincial government, through the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAgrO), is compiling position papers from coastal municipalities, fisherfolk groups, and other concerned parties to formally oppose the Supreme Court (First Division) ruling allowing commercial fishing vessels to operate within the 15-kilometer municipal water zone. PAgrO head Dr. Ildefonso Toledo confirmed that submissions have started arriving at his office and are expected to increase in the coming days. He warned that allowing commercial fishing in municipal waters would severely impact small-scale fisherfolk, who rely on these areas for their livelihood.

    Protect us from Chinese ships, fishers ask Navy, PCG

    Fishermen appealed to the government on Sunday to increase coast guard and naval patrols to protect them from the Chinese Coast Guard, which has stepped up their efforts in recent months to keep them from entering the Scarborough (Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag) Shoal lagoon, where fishes are abundant. In an interview on radio dzBB, the spokesman of the Bigkis ng Mangingisda Federation in Masinloc, Zambales said Chinese vessels and rubber boats continue to block Filipino fishermen from entering the lagoon. “Chinese fishing vessels are also outside, but they can fish more freely in our reef. When Filipino fishermen insist on entering, they are being blocked and chased by Chinese Coast Guard rubber boats,” said Henrelito Empoc, the group’s spokesperson, speaking in Filipino.

    BBM allots P11.2B to lift fishers' lives

    For the first time in recent history, the government is heavily infusing funds to uplift the lives of fishermen, are of the most impoverished sectors of Philippine society. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos is expecting to aid the "poorest of the poor" in the fishing sector through the P11.2-billion Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency project Malacañang announced on Saturday. The Office of the Press Secretary said the project is expected to benefit 354,905 fisherfolks in 24 provinces while creating at least 26,877 jobs.

    Malabon fishermen get 20 boats from BFAR, DOLE

    Members of four fisherfolk groups in Malabon yesterday received 20 motorized boats from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources as well as the Department of Labor and Employment. Mayor Jeannie Sandoval led the turnover of the boats at the city’s amphitheater. The beneficiaries are residents of Barangays Tañong, Hulong Duhat, Concepcion and Ibaba, according to Luziel Balajadia, who heads the city’s public employment and services office.

    Help fishermen find alternative livelihood amid declining fish catch

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) had imposed as early as 2011 a three-month closed season or fishing ban during the period November or December to February or March in critical areas, particularly spawning grounds. The news “Galunggong price drop expected this month – BFAR” (Inquirer.net, 2/5/24) is a welcome relief for those who have less in life. The fish price drop is in anticipation of the start of open fishing season. Historically, the combined marine fish catch during the second and third quarters is 12 percent higher than that of the first and fourth quarters. Hopefully, said price drop will continue until September.

    WPS fishers to get P80-M assistance

    The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will provide P80 million in livelihood assistance to Filipinos fishing in the West Philippine Sea. The amount will be spent on fishing equipment such as bancas, payao, lambaklad, fishing gears or paraphernalia, seaweeds propagation gears and post-harvest equipment, BFAR head of Information and Fisherfolk Coordination Unit and spokesperson Nazario Briguera said at the weekly Laging Handa press briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday. Fuel subsidy for municipal and commercial fishing boats will also be provided.

    PCG, BFAR operations nab illegal fishers

    The Philippine Coast Guard teamed up with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to conduct patrols in Samar Sea to curb illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities in the rich fishing ground of Eastern Visayas. This week, the joint team apprehended two commercial fishing boats operating on the said water that were using the banned Modified Danish Seine locally known as hulbot-hulbot. BFAR regional information officer Christine Gresola said that the two commercial fishing vessels were found fishing on the municipal waters of Daram Island and Tarangnan town in Samar.

    Oriental Mindoro to be placed under state of calamity

    Oriental Mindoro Gov. Humerlito Dolor wants the entire province placed under a state of calamity due to the oil spill from the sunken motor tanker Princess Empress. Dolor said he directed the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to prepare a recommendation for the calamity declaration in view of latest situational reports from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of Health.

    Four arrested for illegal fishing in Panay waters

    Four fishermen were apprehended for engaging in illegal fishing activities in the waters off the coast of the municipality of Panay. The apprehended individuals, identified as “Ricardo”, “Jemrick, “Aladin”, and “Domante”, are residents of Carles, Iloilo. Members of the Philippine Coast Guard, Panay police, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) were conducting a routine seaborne patrol at about 9:20 a.m. on Feb. 15, when they caught the arrested persons in the act of engaging in “PAMO” fishing, which is a violation of Municipal Ordinance No. 03-02, Series of 2003.
