    Prices for vegetables, fish and even rice could shoot up by as much as 20 percent as a result of the damage wrought by super typhoon Karding, the Department of Agriculture (DA) warned Thursday. Agriculture Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban said in an interview that the country’s rice granary, Central Luzon, sustained severe damage during the typhoon, resulting in the loss of 20 percent of the standing crop.

    Typhoon agriculture damage estimate rises to P11.1B

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said it will provide six 20-foot fiberglass boats and two freezers to fisherfolk beneficiaries and associations affected by the storm in Southern Leyte.

    Fishing ban imposed in Batangas

    Local government units in coordination with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and environment and natural resources office has implemented a 22-day ban on commercial fishing in Balayan Bay. The fishing ban, which started yesterday, will allow galunggong (round scad) and matambaka (big-eyed scad) to spawn and replenish. The coastal municipalities of Tingloy, Mabini, Bauan, San Luis, Taal, Lemery, Calaca, Balayan, Calatagan, Lian and Nasugbu initiated the fishing ban.

    BFAR program targets ‘poorest of the poor’

    A total of 3,123 individuals in the Cagayan Valley region will be assisted under the poverty alleviation program of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). According to BFAR, the figure represents 5.0 percent of the total registered fisherfolk in the region who will benefit from the program called Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation (Target). BFAR planning chief Angel Encarnacion said Target will put more emphasis to uplift the standard of living of marginal fishermen in the region.

    Fisheries boom hinges on sustainable use of resources

    The Department of Agriculture (DA) expects a boom in the country’s fisheries sector as it continues to engage with stakeholders to craft and implement policies and programs for sustainable utilization and management of aquatic resources. With modernization steps to gain momentum for sustainable and inclusive growth, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala is positive that efforts of the government will enable the sector to continue providing a stable supply of food, livelihood, and ecological services. Alcala said the DA, through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), has been instituting measures to ensure that fishing in the country’s waters becomes sustainable and that all forms of fishery resource use provide equitable benefits to stakeholders.
