  • Dagupan illegal fish pens demolished

    The city government of Dagupan in Pangasinan province has started demolishing illegal fish pens and cages in three barangays that violated the local fishery code. Seven illegal and oversized fish pens and cages in the villages of Bonuan Gueset, Pugaro-Suit and Salapingao have been dismantled with the help of the Task Force Bantay Ilog, according to Patrick Dizon, officer-in-charge of city’s agriculture office.
  • Low 'bangus' price alarms Pangasinan fish growers

    Reeling from the continuous tumbling prices of farmed “bangus,” fish cage operators in Pangasinan sought the intervention of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and other concerned agencies to prevent the province’s multimillion-peso aquaculture industry from crashing. During a dialogue between bangus industry stakeholders and government agencies on June 21 at the National Fisheries Development Center here, growers of bangus (milkfish) said prices started to drop last February and is now at P90 to P110 per kilo. Last May, bangus, considered the country’s national fish, was still being sold in Pangasinan markets from P120 to P200 a kilo.
  • DENR demolition team sets crosshairs on 492 'illegal' aquaculture pens in Cavite

    A total of 492 illegal aquaculture structures that include fish cages, pens, traps, or baklads, and oyster and mussel farms in Manila Bay area have so far been marked for demolition in four coastal towns of Cavite, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said. These include a total of 333 structures in Cavite City and159 in Kawit and Noveleta.
